PC Pro: Interactive: Forums: Comments: Take a Field Trip to an Apple Store

Kids, fancy time off from school and a visit to an Apple Store instead?

That's what Apple has in mind with the launch of Field Trip, which gives primary

I think if this was anyone but Apple, I'd be denouncing it as unpleasant marketing.

In the same way as I do the 'free' book bags donated by Waitrose at my kids' school.

Or the way cheap M$ software is sold to education to try to lock in parents and teachers to M$. So even though it's Apple, I can't help but feel the same way. There's just something distasteful about marketing to children in the manner of a drug dealer.

This doesn't sit well with me, but I suppose it's still not as bad as what MS are (were?) getting up to with the schools. Marketing to children should be handled very carefully.

I suppose the proof of the pudding is in the eating - how many schools are actually going to go along with this scheme?

Sounds like Apple's play on McDonald's children's birthday parties... "Do you know what this is?

Hmm? No, I can see you do not.

I must agree, this could be a golden opportunity, but also if handled badly a media nightmare... Tread CAREFULLY on this one Apple!

My brother went on a primary school trip to Safeway. Whilst at college, I persuaded our Computer Science lecturer that we should all go to the cinema to see "The Lawnmower Man", as it was relevant to our course Shame it was rubbish

Though I do think that this is a bit unseemly.

For Apple. They could make it a bit more low key.

Also this is very impractical for most schools unless they are within a short distance.

I hope that schools see through this.

How many go on what turn out to be marketing exercises dressed up as "educational"?

Skinny, beardy man with large collar invites school children to his "church" to play with his computer.... You couldn't make this stuff up. In all seriousness, I don't think commerce should have anything to do with a child's education whatsoever.

I can't see apple providing low cost mac's (they're subsidised yes, but still expensive) to schools, so why not take them to an aston martin garage instead?

Or have Capital one come to the school handing out credit cards to the pupils.

We can all see it, and I am sure that the teachers can see that as well.

What ever next day trips to spearmint Rhino for "business studies"

Quote: : What ever next day trips to spearmint Rhino for "business studies" I would have thought that it could be a sports outing for some of the girls and a life drawing class for the rest.

We can all see it, and I am sure that the teachers can see that as well. It's poorly thought out.

Limited to groups of 25.

Missus said, "Well that's never going to happen then".

How do you pick the 5 or 10 in a class that wouldn't be able to go ? I thought maybe it was just a cultural thing that would be seen as perfectly normal in the US, but apparently not: John Gruber on Daring Quote: : I think it’s downright sickening that any school would consider a trip to a retail store as a legitimate field trip.

Consumer advertising has no place in education.

The fact that the U.S.

Public education system is in such a sorry state that this is even possible doesn’t mean Apple should encourage it.

It’s appalling.

How do you pick the 5 or 10 in a class that wouldn't be able to go ? It will be limited to those without ASBO's they might just scrape through then.

Thankfully schools still have to ask the permission of the parents to allow their children off school premises during lesson time.

My slip will be getting a large tick in the 'no' box. Cynical marketing.

What next a trip to a brewery or local glue factory?
