Encyclopaedia Metallum: The Metal Archives :: View topic - Chess
I remember around a year ago there was a chess thread which indicated some degree of popularity of the game around this board so I figured that perhaps we could have another, being the huge chess nerd I am .
I used to play a lot in tournaments, though I mainly just play online nowadays on FICS and shit.
So, who else play chess?
What do you like about it?
|
 |
Has it been determined finally where the game of chess was invented?
Most agree it is of Persian origin,is that right?
|
 |
Wikipedia says that Chess emerged around the 15th century in Southern Europe.
One of the few board games I enjoy playing
As for now I'm to lazy to do anything with my blog.
I'll begin a new one, and try to keep it as updated as possible.
I hate your lives!
Falsegood and lies!
I hate your World, Your paradise drowns in chaos to breed world anarchy

As far as I know, it emerged around 600AD in Persia or Afghanistan or something like that, but the rules that are used today weren't finalised until around the fifteenth century.

I play Chessmaster at my grandfather's house and the soundtrack is extremely metal \m/.

I loved playing chess when I was younger, I used to play [i]all[/] the time, but I don't nor have played it recently or very often.
Wish I could, in this day and age no one wants to sit down and have a serious/rousing game of chess unless its an old man.
It's still a fun game, but I probably suck at it now even though I always thought I was very good at it.
|
 |
I like chess. I remember being younger and playing this Chess Wizard game on one of our old computers, I think the first we ever owned.
I'd play that all the time, and got so excited when I actually beat the computer.
I've played chess online a few times.
I lose a lot.
A lot.
|
 |
I like chess, but not enough to be serious about it and play very competitively.
It's fun when you are against someone of a good match in skill.
|
 |
|
A good game of chess involves me saying "oh shit" a whole bunch of times.

If you love Chess, I'm sure you'll love this band...
Haha, I used to play chess a lot, but I wasn't as good against friends than with computer players at medium difficulty.
I would love to learn more strategies for it though, adn eventually start kicking people's asses.
|
 |
I used to play chess when I was younger and I was pretty decent at it.
I learned it from my grandmother, who of course pwned me with the "4-moves" during our first few matches =p
I remember performing well in grade school chess events.
I haven't played it in a while though.
My favorite opening is the Réti Opening.
|
 |
What I like about chess is the mano a mano aspect, I against you.
Bobby Fischer's "Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess" is the best work you'll ever read on the game.
It boils down all the bullshit to a simple but powerfully effective edict: attack, attack, attack!
|
 |
I haven't played Chess in a long time.
A complete amateur could defeat me now.
I'm not motivated/skilled enough to join a tournament, so I'd only ever play for a bit of fun.

Forum chess! post your move one post at a time!

Very bad idea, unless it's done via PM's.

Chess is a great game.
It's one of my favorite board games.
I love how it challenges you to think up a new strategy each time.
|
 |
Why isn't chess included in the olympics?
Hmmmm

+1
although it would be crazy fun if it weren't done via PM.
Hahaha. anyone could post the next move.
No one could ensure the correctness of the chess pieces' positions though.

I've played a lot of chess over the years, used to compete in tournaments (nothing too special) and stuff, played a reasonable amount online and so on.
I haven't been in a chess mood for a while now though.

Nice, I like to play openings that are similar to that.
The notion of playing chess over PM sounds quite a lot of fun too.
I'd be up for that if anyone wants to.

Great.
I like it since it gives you tight control over your pieces.
I used to combine that with another opening strategy...
I forgot what it was called...
...the end result of the opening had the reti on the king side and then the other opening on the queen side (this one had three pawns lined horizontally with a bishop and knight under two of them)...
...and I had a lot of success with it - as long as i got it setup, which was difficult though if I was playing against an exceptionally aggressive opponent.
|
 |
Oh, I think I see what you mean - you'd advance your pawns on that flank and stick your pieces behind them?
That sort of setup can really crush your opponent if you get enough space on the queenside

*Confession*
I was in my high school's chess club.
I fucking hated how I could never beat the Indian kid at it no matter how hard I tried!
I was 2nd-best in the chess club, and this guy just kept ravaging me.
|
 |
I used to play chess back in elementary school, but now I have no one to play with-and after years of not playing, I fucking suck.
Does anyone have any online resources that would help me improve?
|
 |
I think I was the one who started that chess thread a while back, so yeah, I play a fair amount.
In fact, I won a game a few hours ago.
Any other King's Indian players on here?
Also, my high school chess club wanted our slogan to be "Learn new mating positions", but the school wouldn't let us.
|
 |
I play chess, I used to captain my schools prematurely aborted chess club.
We didn't go to a single competition, just practiced in the library.
I am pretty much bad with strategy, if I win it's because of dumb luck and my ability to read people.
|
 |
|
I already mentioned this in some other chess thread way back - www.redhotpawn.com is a great site for all you chess lovers.
|
 |
I actually started playing there a little while ago.
It is a very nice, user friendly site - one of the better web-based correspondence chess sites out there.

Last I heard a 'chess' like game was brought to Europe via trade routes with Persia but the Europeans took the game added one piece (the rook I think) and changed the original pieces to European equivalents (from scholar to Bishop etc, horse rider to knight).
So you could argue that modern chess is European and it has a direct Persian ancestor or that it is Persian and the Europeans copied it.
Either way, everyone plays the 'European' version now.
It's an awesome game...
I'm just a bit shit at it.

Nah, I'm Dvsty on there.

Fun game, I prefer to play with huge pieces rather than a small board in front of my face.
|
 |
I'm absolutely terrible it (that's my opinion, at least), but it's a fun game.
I've only played against a few people, and I lost to most of them, but they chess a lot, while I play occasionally.

I've always enjoyed a great game of chess.
Me and the girlfriend are evenly matched and we have some really excellent games.
We occasionally go a week or two playing one or two games each night.
Lots of fun. Strip chess is excellent...
|
 |
I love Chess and have no one to play against.
I started teaching my kid Checkers to hopefully one day work up to Chess.
We also have a Mad Magazine version of the card game War, which he quite enjoys.
But I'm not especially good at strategy games.
I suck at Transformers Risk except the one time I beat my brother and my wife.
Megatron kicked their fool asses that day!
|

Chess Rulz!
period!!
but like everyone
i dont have to play with
XD

The last time I played a game was at least a year ago, in the beer garden of a local pub.
They have giant plastic pieces about 2 feet tall and a patio chess board.
I won, but just barely.
|
 |
I used to play chess quite a bit but I don't play very much anymore.
I was pretty good at one point but I'd probably suck now because I'd be rusty as hell.
|
 |
I'm quite good at it.
Only problem is my flatmate is REALLY good at it....
In games won, he's up 67-0.
We play lots of chess.
