Celine Dion: Fan or Not? - Digital Forum
I've always been curious as to why Celine Dion has so many supporters.
Congratulations to her are in order for her successes, but I would personally don't get it.
I wish more Canadian artists would be afforded the kind of exposure that she gets.
I came across this interesting little ditty on youtube...

Rock on, Dion.
Scary Stuff..

Well, you might want to spell her name correctly first.
LOL.
She's not a hockey player.
|
 |
|
She's probably a better player than Gilbert was lol

Some of her stuff is okay in very small doses.
I get irate at soft rock FM stations that play nothing but Celine, Elton, and Michael Bolton.
I give Phil Collins a reluctant green light only because I was a huge Genesis fan up until and including Abacab.
Celine Dion is an industry, so we get industrial-generic love music, or as Jessica Holmes as Celine pronounces it on Air Farce: "Lerv"...

Personally, I don't mind a bit of her stuff, a few of her songs over the years.
Would never go to a concert or anything.
Not to be too cruel, but I can't stand the sight of her performing.
But, I have relatives all across Canada who have every album she ever made, saw her in her Vegas act and can't wait to see her again.
Don't think she is taking anything, artistically or monetarily, from any other act in Canada or otherwise.

Oops!
I couldn't find any of her CD's in the house, so I just guessed.
She's kind of like Neil Young.
You either love her or

I like her old stuff, back when she was singing in French.
In fact, I have a CD entitled Dion chante Plamondon in which she sings songs written by famed Quebecois songwriter Luc Plamondon.
Some really good songs on there, from a pop point of view.
cheers,

Why must Canadians make a sport of denigrating successful Canadians ?
IMO, Dion is dumped on far too much by Canadians.
She is no different from Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey (except she makes a lot more) who also pump out out overwrought music.
It's not my cup of tea but for a lot of people, its very enjoyable.
In addition, her Vegas act was said to be very entertaining.
I am not a fan of Celine but if hundreds of millions of people around the world think she is great, why can't Canadians be proud of that and give her some credit.
IMO, If you don't like her then just don't listen but have some respect for what she has accomplished.

I think the issue many people have with Celine Dion is that the "establishment" puts her front and center as an example of what's good about Canada to the detriment of a lot of other artists.
|
 |
Jvincent, well I don't know who these "establishment" people are but what is wrong with saying that Celine is one of of Canada's biggest stars and leaving it at that?
I'm no religious person, but I think its more a case of envy
from wikipedia under the seven deadly sins
Quote: : Like greed, envy may be characterized by an insatiable desire;
They differ, however, for two main reasons.
First, greed is largely associated with material goods, whereas envy may apply more generally.
Second, those who commit the sin of envy resent that another person has something they perceive themselves as lacking, and wish the other person to be deprived of it.
Dante defined this as "love of one's own good perverted to a desire to deprive other men of theirs." In Dante's Purgatory, the punishment for the envious is to have their eyes sewn shut with wire, because they have gained sinful pleasure from seeing others brought low.
Aquinas described envy as "sorrow for another's good".

If they left it at that I think most people would be OK.
But she's usually placed on this pedestal and promoted as THE shining example of what's good about Canada.
That's the issue I have.

 |
I'm not a fan of hers as a person or an entertainer.
That being said, I would feel the same way regardless of where she was born.
I think Canadians, for the most part, are proud of our entertainers who make it big south of the border, especially those who still promote their Canadian roots.
Hollywood is filled with lots of Canadian comedians that we adore.
On the other hand we have people like Pam Anderson who I simply wish would vanish off of the face of the earth.
Rant off.

I respect her impressive voice, but I don't care for her brand of pop music, her grating personality or her irritating "showmanship".
But she sells records and makes people money, and so she is a "brighter beacon" than artists who, overall (songwriting, musicianship, creativity, etc.), might be more deserving of lofty accolaides.

Hugh Said "Why must Canadians make a sport of denigrating successful Canadians ?"
Because it's fun.
Personalities like Celine have been fodder for Canadian and American humourists for years.
Politicians, jocks, journalists etc.
Are all held under a microscope and lampooned as seen fit.
It's the price you pay for success.
Life is tough. Roll with the punches.
The million dollar royalty payments will ease the pain.
It's not meant to be taken seriously.
We're all jealous.
