Barry Melrose coach of Tampa Bay - The Buffalo Range, where the Buffalo fans roam!
What a freaking joke.
|
 |
|
Not Sabres related, please put in the NHL section.
|
 |
|
Thank god we don't have to hear him on espn now
|
 |
|
Guy will be back in the booth within 1 1/2 years
|
 |
|
What did he do in LA?
|
 |
Well 30 other teams passed on him for at least 12 years.
I know this new owner thinks he's smarter than everyone.
I think he made his first mistake with Melrose.
And did you see he took Tocchet and Wes Walz as assistants?
Vinny to Montreal (e5).
LOL
|
 |
The owner also says they're going to be "shockingly aggressive" in free agency.
Ooh, first you grab Barry the Mullet and now you're basically saying you're going to throw cash around recklessly in July!
I'm sure the entire NHL is shaking in their boots hahaha.

Quote: : what did he do in LA?
He made the Stanley Cup finals as many times as Lindy Ruff (the best coach in Sabres' history).
With Kelly Hrudey as his starting goalie no less.
He's also won a Memorial and Calder Cup.
I really don't see how people could say he is a joke.

That's why I asked, I don't know anything about him, other than what I see of him on ESPN

Dude, i loved wes wals in nhl 05.

The new owners in TB are just rtying to create a buzz, I mean it wasn't like they had a coach who had won a Stanley Cup or anything.

-Okay--First, the Mullet, Nuff said.
-Cameo role in "Slapshot II".
-Lets see...taken in the second round 36th overall in the 1976 NHL draft by the Montreal Canadiens: 300 NHL Games, 10 goals, 23 assists...More than 700 penalty minutes.
-I have to feel bad for Tampa Bay here.
They get a coach who has three years of experience some thirteen years ago.
At least when the Isles got Teddy Nolan his relevance wasnt hard to imagine.
Bit on the upside, at least TB is consistent, their last coach had experience with FSN Pittsburgh, and this one comes from ESPN!
As far as his record goes--lets take a look:
MINORS:
He coached the 19871988 season with the Medicine Hat Tigers of the WHL, leading them to a 44226 record and a Memorial Cup title.
He coached the next season with the Seattle Thunderbirds before jumping to the AHL and coaching the Adirondack Red Wings.
He spent three years with the Red Wings, leading them to a Calder Cup win in the 19911992 season.
NHL
Beginning with the 1992-1993 season, Melrose coached the NHL's Los Angeles Kings, leading them to the 1993 Stanley Cup Finals, which they lost to the Montreal Canadiens in five games.
He continued coaching the Kings for two more seasons, finishing both years out of the playoffs and with losing records.
So Actually, BuffaloSoldier-- Lets take a look at the numbers between Mullet Melrose and Lindy "the Rock" Ruff:
Melrose
1992-93 LA Kings 84 39 35 10 0 0.524 Lost in Finals
1993-94 LA Kings 84 27 45 12 0 0.393 Out of Playoffs
1994-95 LA Kings 48 16 23 9 0 0.427 Out of Playoffs
AND
LINDY RUFF
993-94 Florida Panthers NHL Assistant Coach
1994-95 Florida Panthers NHL Assistant Coach
1995-96 Florida Panthers NHL Assistant Coach
1996-97 Florida Panthers NHL Assistant Coach
1997-98 Buffalo Sabres 82 36 29 17 0 0.543 Lost in round 3
1998-99 Buffalo Sabres 82 37 28 17 0 0.555 Lost in Finals
1999-00 Buffalo Sabres 82 35 32 11 4 0.518 Lost in round 1
2000-01 Buffalo Sabres 82 46 30 5 1 0.598 Lost in round 2
2001-02 Buffalo Sabres 82 35 35 11 1 0.500 Out of Playoffs
2002-03 Buffalo Sabres 82 27 37 10 8 0.439 Out of Playoffs
2003-04 Buffalo Sabres 82 37 34 7 4 0.518 Out of Playoffs
2005-06 Buffalo Sabres 82 52 24 0 6 0.671 Lost in round 3
2006-07 Buffalo Sabres 82 53 22 0 7 0.689 Lost in round 3
2007-08 Buffalo Sabres 82 39 31 0 12 0.549
So, perhaps you want to compare Lindy and the Mullet again?
Probably Not, Lindy takes it every way you can imagine.
Honestly, do you think there is a reason that he hasn't been picked up in 13 years?
If not, just let me know when you want to bet on a game--any game, Ill take your money.

Quote: : So, perhaps you want to compare Lindy and the Mullet again?
He wasn't comparing them, all he said was they both made the Finals once and he was right about that.
You really can't compare a guy that was in the NHL as a head coach for 3 years against a guy that has been here for 10 years.
All he was doing was stating a fact and you took that one fact way to far.

Quote: : The new owners in TB are just rtying to create a buzz, I mean it wasn't like they had a coach who had won a Stanley Cup or anything.
I think you are on to something.
I've been living in non-traditional hockey markets for a long time.
I don't think there is there a better known hockey guy in the non-traditional US hockey markets than Barry Melrose because of his Cup run and ESPN job.
If TB is trying to generate interest in their team, they probably picked the right guy.
That said, who knows what will happen with the team under Melrose's control.

Sorry, Bflofan4life: No dice.
It would be very easy to say that Mullet caught a break-1st year coach goes deep in the playoffs-
Lets see...how hard was it for him:
Wayne Gretzky: remember this guy?
Had a bunch of goals in a bunch of playoffs.
Luc Robitaille: First Team All Star that year.
Oh yeah, he had 22 points in those playoffs.
Just go check wikipedia for the controversies that surrounded that SINGULAR appearance in the playoffs by Mr Mullet.
Oh it was illustrious, not withstanding the unique stickwork of longtime Gretzky bodyguard Marty Mcsorley, and even a controversial clip to the face by--none other than--the Gray, I mean the Great one himself.
Sorry-I didnt take it too far.
I merely choked a little bit when somebody tried to claim that Barry Melrose somehow held a candle to the coaching abilities of Lindy Ruff.
Because if you somehow think that a a first year coach who made it deep in the playoffs ONCE with a Wayne Gretzky team is somehow in the same leagues with Lindy, then you too, Sir, are crazy.
Especially when he never made the playoffs again.
And this was many years before Wayne became the "Gray One".
I look forward to your response.

You guys see the headline in the St.
Pete's Times?
June 25, 2008 (Evening Edition)
by Joe Smithy
New bench rule in Tampa Bay:
- All Canadian born players must sport mullets.
May be of the power, mini, mohawk or partially balding variety, but not of the fem variety.
Failure to sport one of above said types of mullet will result in immediate contract buyout.

Southside Wow.
Good job of wasting a lot of time.
I don't recall ever saying Melrose was a better coach than Ruff.
Reading Comprehension 101.
I simply stated that Melrose has been to as many Stanley Cup Finals as Ruff (the best coach in Sabres' history and one of the best in the league).
Melrose also has won 2 other championships as well.
I simply tried to show that he was not the joke people were making him out to be.
So any time you wanna have a reading contest, let me know.
I'll take your money every time.

Southside Really you are taking away the fact that Melrose made the finals because he had good players???
How does that make any sense?
All coaches need good players to be successful.
Ruff went to the finals with the most dominate goalie in the league carrying his team on his back.
So does his finals berth not count now?
Terrible argument.

Every coach needs great players to go to the finals like BuffaloSolider2 said.
If you really want to look into what you said you could say Ruff couldn't do it with 3-4 all stars.
Ruff never made it to the finals when we had Drury, Briere, Campbell and Miller.
So saying he only did it because he had a couple of good players makes no sense because you if you got bad players you will go no where and Ruff had great players and he didn't make it to the finals
