Cassin's Kingbird ?? - Playa Del Rey, CA - BirdForum
I think this is a Cassin's Kingbird seen today in Playa Del Rey, CA.
I couldn't get a photo of the bird from the front, but this bird appears to have pale tips on the tail which would be good for a Cassin's.
I don't see any white on the edges of the tail which would indicate a Western Kingbird.
Also from what I can see of the face there doesn't appear to be enough white for a Western Kingbird.
What do you guys think???

I agree, Cassin's Kingbird - I can see some white on the tip of the tail, Also Cassin's Kingbird is more likely this time of year than Western.

Indeed, a Cassin's.
Notice the light-tipped tail feathers and the contrasting white on the face, with the dark gray of the head and breast.

I'm confused by the "more likely this time of year" part.
I took the below photos last year at the Madronna Marsh also in Southern California.
I don't remember the exact dates when I took them but it was either Jan or Feb.
I I.D.ed these at the time as Western Kingbirds.
Am I wrong on their I.D.??

"I I.D.ed these at the time as Western Kingbirds.

I'd say not.
Compare the bill size;
Slighter on your bird - head and throat colours;
Paler grey head and whiter throat - and the fringing on the secondaries, tertials, greater coverts and scapulars;
Much less pronounced on your bird than the Cassin's above.
Plus I also get the impression of white outer tail feathers on the second of your photos.
Mind you it's been a while for me since I've seen either...!!

Hahaha, I'm in Dave's boat on pretty much all counts - I think your older photos are Westerns - more certain about the 2nd one - and it's also been quite a while since I've done ANY birding, let alone birding in the west!

Thanks guys.
I was hoping I was right about the Cassin's, that's a lifer for me.
Glad to know I didn't miss identify the Western Kingbirds.

Also, for future reference, the calls will easily separate Cassin's and Western Kingbirds...
