What salary cap is needed for MLS to be on par with the Mexican League? - BigSoccer
For MLS to be as good as the Mexican League, the salary cap has to increase.
The question is how much.
In my opinion, if the Mexican League = EPL, then MLS would be about Ligue 1/Bundesliga level (maybe even Dutch/Portugal level).
MLS vs.
Mexican League in competitive matches:
2008 CONCACAF Champions Cup:
Pachuca 2-0 DC United
DC United 2-1 Pachuca
2007 CONCACAF Champions Cup:
Houston 2-0 Pachuca
Pachuca 5-2 Houston (won in ET)
DC United 1-1 Guadalajara
Guadalajara 2-1 DC United
2006 CONCACAF Champions Cup:

Both MLS teams lost in the quarterfinals to Costa Rican teams.
Both Mexican clubs made it to the final.
2005 CONCACAF Champions Cup:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CONCACA...ns%27_Cup_2005
DC United 1-Pumas 1
Pumas 5- DC united 0
2007 Copa Sudamericana
DC United 2-1 Guadalajara
Guadalajara 1-0 DC United
In all instances, Mexican clubs advanced over MLS clubs.
(though MLS was in pre-season).

The question is, what will it take to get the cap to get that high?
Higher ticket prices?
More sponsors on the jersey like said Mexican League?

Several MLS teams that can afford a $6-7 mil salary cap in 2009:
Galaxy
RedBull
Toronto
Seattle
Chicago
Philadephia (in 2010)
DC United ($2.3 mil salary cap + $1.9 mil DP = $4.2 mil salary cap right now)
RSL (if they can average 18,000 + in their new stadium in 2009)
And yes, they can raise the ticket price.
The Galaxy did (from $20 to $38).
And if Toronto get a well-known DP, you can bet that Toronto will raise the ticket price too.

Quote: : Just as he filled the coffers of Manchester United and Real Madrid before _ they're the world's two richest clubs _ now the Galaxy have tripled their season-ticket base, increased the average ticket from $20 in 2006 to $38, and signed a $4-5 million-per-year jersey sponsorship deal with Herbalife.
Let's assume only $5 increase in ticket price in exchange for a much higher quality team ($6 mil salary cap vs.
$2.3 mil).
18 games x $5 x 17,000 = $1.53 mil
You can safely assume that attendance/sponsorship/merchandise will be much higher for a $6 mil cap team than a $2.3 mil cap team.
An increase of 2,000 in average attendance.
18 games x 2,000 x $30 = $1.08mil

You have to have every team with a stadium before you can do this.
The teams without stadiums, including D.C.
United, are not making money.
They can't get all of the ticket, concessions, or parking revenue.
We are talking rents in the millions of dollars and concession and parking can double the ticket revenue, if not more.
Until everyone has a stadium, I don't think that MLS can survive with a raised salary cap.
With the stadium, I think that 5-10 mil would be good.
It would grow with the added sponsors, ticket, concession, and parking revenues.

You need the stadium, a jersey sponsor and a stadium sponsor.
The Crew has two of the three and they've yet to break into the black because they've failed on the stadium sponsorship.
New England is missing all three, which is why despite a "favorable" stadium lease they won't be doing it anytime soon and Seattle seems to be going aong those lines though slightly better with the jersey.

Looking at FMF seems to me to be an excellent way to look at the salary cap issue, rather than say, gaining parity with the CC Championship.
That's beyond what could be realistically achieved in the next collective bargaining agreement.
Let's institute revenue sharing and let the LA Galaxy pay for all those teams not making enough money .

Since LA basically dictates the rules of the league, let's say about twelve grips.

I think sooner rather than later, the league is going to have to extend the cap for the teams that can afford it.
I think like with contraction before, we'll have to go through a second phase of pruning.
This time, though, we won't necessarily lose anyone.
Just teams with terrible leases (NY, DC, KC) will not have the funds to keep up until they can get their stadium situation corrected.
This will help in multiple ways.
First, new ownership will have to be very serious about revenue.
So we'll prevent half-assed investors from looking.
Second, it will push teams like DC to find a stadium.
Or push a Columbus to find the stadium sponsor.
Or really push a Dallas to generate more sales.
In the end, no team would get contracted because they'll still be in the same situation.
But those teams that are generating profit will be able to put out a better product.

That's just offensive to suggest they only need to work harder at their stadium, given the ordeals they've been through the past years.
