Kilda v Hawthorn, tape-delay, immediately following Carlton v Sydney And some talking points (to be expanded upon)... After some results, especially with Adelaide and Brisbane losing last weekend, it appears that the finals race -- and especially for the #8 spot -- has opened up again.

Ahead of the Geelong v Western Bulldogs blockbuster, the Cats have injury concerns over Gary Ablett Jr., who hasn't yet been officially ruled out of the match, but won't train this week nonetheless due to an ankle sprain.

And Bulldogs coach Rodney Eade says his team is going to have to lift on its efforts after beating Melbourne (unimpressively, in his view) last weekend.

And staying indirectly on Geelong's injuries, and the one to tagger Cameron Ling, the footy public awaits the verdict on the punishment to Fremantle's Dean Solomon for the elbow that broke Ling's cheekbone at the weekend.

As Ling is likely to miss 3-4 weeks, Solomon publicly apologized to Ling and the Geelong Football Club for the incident, but that may not register a blip with the AFL's Tribunal, who will adjudicate the incident directly over the Match Review Panel due to Solomon's poor disciplinary record.

And Brendan Fevola's contract situation at Carlton should be resolved this week -- if Fevola's being true to his words, he rang in to Triple M's pre-game show on Saturday afternoon to say (while his contract situation was a topic of discussion by the station's footy panel at the time) that he expects to sign a new contract "in a matter of days". All the news, and more talking points, yet to come as the week unfolds... And the deadline to getting your tips in is ahead of Friday night's game.

The ladder, through 15 rounds... Code: teams p w l d % pts 1.

Geelong 15 14 1 0 152.0 56 2.

West. B'dogs 15 13 1 1 134.1 54 3.

Hawthorn 15 13 2 0 130.0 52 4.

Sydney 15 9 5 1 125.3 38 5.

Collingwood 15 9 6 0 120.7 36 6.

Adelaide 15 8 7 0 105.9 32 7.

Brisbane 15 8 7 0 103.1 32 8.

St. Kilda 15 8 7 0 99.8 32 9.

North Melb. 15 7 7 1 94.4 30 10.

Carlton 15 7 8 0 93.7 28 11.

Richmond 15 6 8 1 96.5 26 12.

Essendon 15 6 9 0 82.1 24 13.

Port Adelaide 15 4 11 0 92.0 16 14.

Fremantle 15 2 13 0 85.8 8 15.

West Coast 15 2 13 0 65.0 8 16.

Melbourne 15 2 13 0 64.6 8 That should provide a context to one of the talking points, with eight points separating spots 6 through 12 -- Adelaide, Brisbane and St.

Kilda shouldn't book September plans yet, while no one should count Essendon out yet, especially not after four wins on the trot.

I know its a little bit late- but you hardly hear any AFL news up here. You know how the rugby types and AFL types mock football/soccer players for taking dives- how will they explain this one then? Quote: : Wakelin, who admitted taking a dive after Barry Hall lashed out on Saturday. Wakelin hit the deck after Hall took a swing at him, resulting in the Sydney forward being suspended indefinitely by the club. After the match, Wakelin admitted he took a dive to try and milk a free kick.

Am I the only one in the football/soccer world who finds this ironic?

Whether Wakelin milked it or not is irrelevant to what happened to Barry Hall in the final analysis.

In the first half of that Sydney v Collingwood split round match, Hall actually committed a total of five offenses on or off the ball, and the grand total of that was reason enough for the Swans board -- through the advice of the club's psychologist -- to act as they did, to suspend him indefinitely. I'll keep this tangent on this thread here for now, but I can see myself splitting it into a thread topic of its own if need be.

Updating a busy Monday night of news, most of it disciplinary-related... As expected, the Dean Solomon case is going straight to the AFL's Tribunal, as the Match Review Panel refused to levy another punishment on the much-penalized Fremantle hard man. (frame-by-frame photos from The Age reveal the incident in question) Elsewhere, for their parts over the past weekend, the Match Review Panel has offered Sydney's Amon Buchanon a five-match penalty for making head-high contact, a four-match sanction to West Coast's Daniel Kerr, as well as North Melbourne's Daniel Pratt for three matches and Fremantle's Ryan Crowley for one match. In other league and team matters, Brisbane's young ruckman Matthew Leuenberger will miss the remainder of the season, following knee surgery that will happen later this week.

Leuenberger's news comes on the heels of Lions coach Leigh Matthews facing the week ahead of the match against West Coast without Jonathan Brown or Simon Black, also due to injuries. Sydney coach Paul Roos has issued a demand to his team's defenders to "get back to basics" in order to maintain the Swans' current top-four position.

Roos also admitted that his team's forward line structure is among the least of his own worries, as they have responded well with Barry Hall missing. As far as Adelaide's forward problems with injuries are concerned, coach Neil Craig -- whose team has lost four games in a row for the first time in his tenure -- could be looking at a quick-fix approach to getting both Jason Porplyzia and Brett Burton healthy sooner rather than later.

Porplyzia could only be out for a few weeks with his bad shoulder, while Burton's looking at the same type of radical reconstructive knee surgery that saw Sydney's Nick Malceski miss only a few months. And Hawthorn will go into their key match against a motivated St.

Kilda side without coach Alistair Clarkson feeling the need to play Shane Crawford in order to win.

Crawford, the former Brownlow Medalist from 1999, is no automatic to line up against the Saints, with ongoing tendonitis in his left knee.

The Tuesday night update.... The season for Fremantle's Dean Solomon is effectively over, as the AFL Tribunal has handed him an eight-match ban for his head-high elbow on Geelong's Cameron Ling last weekend. Meanwhile, Geelong superstar on-baller Gary Ablett Jr.

Has been officially ruled out of Saturday afternoon's blockbuster against the Western Bulldogs, since the ligament damage in his ankle is too severe for him to recover in time. Adelaide plans on attacking in increased numbers in a tactic to cover for the loss of key forwards Jason Porplyzia and Brett Burton, young Crows midfielder Chris Knights has admitted. Injury list, Round 16 -- Herald Sun

Since my on-line access might be limited the rest of the week...here goes nothing: Friday, 18 July North Melbourne v Collingwood Saturday, 19 July Geelong v Western Bulldogs Richmond v Essendon Brisbane v West Coast St.

Kilda v Hawthorn Sunday, 20 July Carlton v Sydney Port Adelaide v Adelaide Fremantle v Melbourne -- since I really can't tip a scoreless draw (can I?)

After last week's disgraceful tipping effort, (I feel like Fremantle now) hoping this week will be a return back to normal.

Here are my tips... North Melbourne Geelong Richmond Brisbane Hawthorn Sydney Adelaide Fremantle

North Melbourne v Collingwood Geelong v Western Bulldogs Richmond v Essendon Brisbane v West Coast St.

Kilda v Hawthorn Carlton v Sydney Port Adelaide v Adelaide Fremantle v Melbourne

North Melbourne Western Bulldogs Richmond Brisbane Hawthorn Sydney Port Adelaide Melbourne
