Associated Press admits: Crap journalism is purposeful - ADVrider
Interesting article over at the politico.
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0708/11716.html
Especially in light of the fact that the AP's coverage of the Presidential Race has been pretty craptacular.
They admit, that they're trying to "tell it like it is" and offer analysis rather than just straight up news.
The problem is, most of the people who right for the AP are fucking morons who don't understand the way it is, much less how to tell it like it is.
My career is in technology, and I long gave up on technology rags because it was obvious that the guys writing about shit didn't actually ever use the shit.
Blogs have taken over this medium as a result, because you get actual informed opinion.
The AP move appears to be designed to fight the proliferation of blogs, but the problem is their 22 year old college flunkies seem to think shit they find on the bottom of their shoe is insightful.
They're just repeating crap they've picked up elsewhere, generally someone elses spin.
Welcome to the Echo Chamber.
As such, the blogs become even more important, if you are looking for genuine informed opinion.
I'm just utterly amazed, that this was purposeful.
I just figured they were cutting costs and laid off the good writers.

Let me see if I can find the AP story on this, and I'll paste it here.

But seriously, when I want opinionated writing, I'll turn to the editorials, or the Blogs, or see what Jinx has thrown up here lately.
But for news reporting, I want the writing to come from a neutral perspective.
This is a bad move by AP, I hope they can get their shit back together.

HAHA!
I seldom misspell words, but I often misuse them.

Fuck that. If there's proof that the devil does exist, it's in moves like this.
There's plenty of opinion already out there.
It's called Blogs.
There's plenty of lightweight reporting with l33tspeak writing masquerading as news out there.
It's called Damn Near Everything Called News.
(If I see another CNN anchor slouch and get snotty and opinionated, I'm gonna go postal.
If I read another story by some kid who thinks it's cute to use slang and hand-wring over shit that doesn't matter, I'm gonna look them up and give them a stylebook enema.)
AP has got enough problems without creating this one.
From what I can tell, the different formats are clearly labelled, at least on the broadcast wire.
Unfortunately if you're just looking for an AP byline, the reader may get the blog-o-fied version if they're not savvy enough.
For the haters, this just plays into their hands.
The problem when you have the hipsters creating hip news is that when it comes time for them and their reader/listener/viewer to grow the fuck up and find the good ol' stodgy "just the facts, ma'am" stuff so they can get the information they need to make good decisions, it's been sacrificed at the altar of cost-cutting because the hip stuff is so much more kewl according to the fucking brain-dead focus groups full of trustafarian asstards.
It's simple.
Be fair, get your fucking facts and attribution right, and let the reader/listener/viewer decide.

g , woman, would ya quit shittin around and tell us how you really feel?
I likes yer style...
that rumbling you hear in WNC is my late granddad rolling over in his grave over this shit being pawned as news.
He was old-school.
Facts, using english, proper grammar, and dignity.
That is news. all else is BS.
And if editors don't figure that out, every fucking rag in the country is going to go under.

I liked all of it but this part is my favorite.

Nah.
Nobody is neutral.
And nobody gets the facts right.
Let them be craptacularly opinionated.
At least it's an honest and truthful perspective.

I think we should expect more than that from our most important news organizations, and the the run-up to this disastrous war is a good example of why.
If no-one is vocalizing a position, does that mean it doesn't exist?
Separately, I'm not sure that sexier ledes are the solution.

I don't think you have to take any side (liberal, conservative) other than the one opposite the one of the interviewee.
Once the questions dissolve into slow and up the middle, that's when it's no longer fair--someone just got a pass.
edit - had to run - where do you think it came off the rails and why?
Iinternal or external newsroom pressure?
Cowed by public opinion of the media as liberal?
All/none of the above?

Yes, cowed by public opinion, just like the politicians.
The power of propaganda.
Nationalism is a fierce fucker.
Because they couldn't find a prominent politician who was willing to challenge the Administration's mendacity all sorts of assertions went uninvestigated, on a daily basis.
Even at the time, I thought the fourth estate was abandoning ship on its responsibilities.
