Apple CEO Steve Jobs says iPhone software sales booming
Quote: Apple Inc.
Chief executive Steve Jobs estimates that users have downloaded more than 60 million programs for the iPhone in the month since the company opened its App Store, according to a report Monday.
The Wall Street Journal Quote: d Cupertino-based Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) CEO Jobs as saying that the company also sold about $1 million daily in applications, equaling about $30 million in a month's time.
One of the many Silicon Valley businesses benefiting from the iPhone effect is Mountain View-based Loopt Inc., which said it added more than 100,000 people to its user base in just a few weeks without advertising or promotion.
With the release of the 3G iPhone in July, Apple Inc.
Launched its online App Store, a place where developers can hawk mobile applications, getting free marketing and access to millions of new customers.
"We're just beginning to see where this will lead, but it marks an overall shift in how things are going to be done in the mobile environment," said Evan Tana, director of product management at Loopt, a Web-based location service that allows users to see nearby friends.
If sales keep going as they have, Apple could get about $360 million in new revenue a year, and the Journal reported that Jobs said it might reach a $1 billion marketplace.
Jobs said developers took about $21 million as their share of sales in the first month.
$1 million a day, that's enough to make Ricardo cry.

Lot's of people wasting there money...
IMO, the Iphone looks plain and boring, especially with the new plastic back.
The looks of the Dare add a whole new level of awesomeness, without compromising simplicity....

Hmmm, lots of happy customers buying lots of accessories for their beloved gadget.
Doesn't seem all that wasteful to me.

Here's some more quick factoids I read today, related to your OP Socal :
* Users have now downloaded more than 60 million programs for the iPhone and iPod touch, or roughly 2 million per day.
* Revenue from those applications came to about $30 million.
70% went to the developers;
Apple kept 30%. (Free apps apparently accounted for the vast majority of the downloads, since average revenue per download is 50 cents.)
* If sales continue at the current pace, Apple stands to clear at least $360 million a year.
“This thing’s going to crest a half a billion, soon,” Jobs told the Wall Street Journal.
“Who knows, maybe it will be a $1 billion marketplace at some point in time….
I’ve never seen anything like this in my career for software.”
* Of the $21 million that developers cleared in the first month, roughly $9 million went to the creators of the top 10 best sellers.
Sega Corp., for example, says it sold more than 300,000 copies of its $9.99 Super Monkeyball game in 20 days.
* Jobs believes a rich array of applications is what will distinguish the iPhone from competing cell phones.
“Phone differentiation used to be about radios and antennas and things like that,” he told the Journal.
“We think, going forward, the phone of the future will be differentiated by software.”
Quote: Apple had earlier reported that 10 million apps were downloaded in the first three days after launch.
By July 21, that number had reached 25 million (see here).
The latest number suggests that downloads have accelerated in the last 10 days, from July 21st’s 1.25 apps per day to the current 2 apps per day.
Quote: "..free downloads to paid downloads is about 10 to 1."

Quote: 's also quite clear that the Dare is a featurephone, not a smartphone, so if you were hoping to manage email effectively or keep up with your appointments, you're probably better off sticking with one of those Big Kids phones -- even if the Dare's messaging and contact integration is admirable.
The browser is also a "full HTML" browser in the most minor of senses.
Sure it understands HTML, but it won't be rendering web pages anything like they're supposed to look, other than specially formatted mobile sites -- which sort of defeats the purpose.
At least the anti-aliased fonts are a step up from traditional Verizon fare.
In all we'd liken the phone to its incohesive and boring external design: all the right elements are there, but they might need some more time in the oven to really make sense.

Quote: We certainly wouldn't want to call this an iPhone killer since it doesn't have features such as Wi-Fi, and its Web browser and media player aren't as good

As much as I prefer the aluminum back of the v1 iPhone, it's necessary because of the 3G connectivity inside.
Other than that, it's actually a really nice looking device in person, at least I think so.
The Dare isn't that exciting a phone.
The HTC Diamond/Raphael are much more appealing looking devices I think, and have a much nicer interface than the LG.

300,000 copies of Super Monkeyball sold already @ $10 each?!
"booming" is not the word I would use...
"nuclear explosion" is a more accurate description.

300,000 copies of Super Monkeyball?
That can't be correct.
Ricardo swore to me that no one would pay for games like Super Monkeyball on the iPod when they could simply wait 6 months and get Pong on the Zune for free

I think its just the tip of the iceberg.
Stuff like DataCase ( yes we know similar stuff existed...) makes the iPhone so much more useful.
Thats just version 1 and it was the easiest I have ever used on a device wirelessly.
Bonjour is just amazing.
The racing games are so much fun and graphic/sound/accelerometer combination is simply the best I've ever seen on smartphone devices.
This is just a month...
I can't wait to see what stuff comes out by the end of the year and 09.
Apple has a killer hardware/software combo with iPhone and Touch here folks.

Well can't say I am surprised.
Look for others to try an emulate the business model.
(t-Mobile?)

Looks like Apple will continue to play 'R&D' for the industry

Analyst: 3 million iPhones sold in first month
"Momentum isn't showing any signs of a dip;
Sales blow past expectations." -Scott Moritz
Quote: The blistering sales pace of Apple's new gadget defies the otherwise downward trends in consumer spending, employment levels and overall economic health.
The 3 million figure is much higher than Wall Street analysts had anticipated.
Forecasts called for total quarterly sales of three million to four million.
