Quick Qs: OS's and Ram, and comparative cores... - Total War Center Forums

Sorry to start another new topic, but im hoping to get a quick answer and this topic can then swiftly disappear. I'm going to buy new PC tonight.

Got pretty much everything sorted except 2 things. Firstly, i can get 8gb ddr2 ram with a 64 bit vista, or 4gb ddr3 with xp 32 bit (for a bit cheaper).

I have no idea which would get me better performance and debate between the two computer science guys i asked is split.

So i don't know which would be better. Secondly i can get a Intel® Core™2 Quad Q6600 (4 X 2.40GHz) 1066MHz FSB/8MB Cache for cheaper (or within 5 so pounds of) than getting a Intel® Core™2 Duo E8400 (2 X 3.00GHz) 1333MHz FSB/6MB L2 Cache. Just in Case your curious as to the rest of the specs.... Here is Sim's guide to Ram That should fix any problems you have. For the cores, I would go with E8400 until Quad matures (more applications support it) Now most games don't even support duelcore, but all games being released will. I have E8400 and have had no problems with it so far (1 month) I have had it overclocked to 3.8GHZ Since the day I received it and it is lightning fast. For gaming, E8400 would be a better option. Oh and I would avoid the 9800GT...

You can get 4870 for around the same and its something like 70% better, something like that. All I know is 4870 is gawdly when you have 2 of them, and single is really great to.

This is actually a tough situation.

Go with 64-bit Vista, but I really don't think you need all 8 GB's.

No game supports that much...

(Although I wish it did, because I need something to help out in COD4.

) But don't go with the XP 32-bit.

It won't read all 4 GB's.

I wouldn't recommend 32-bit Vista at this point.

Get 64-bit, whether you go with 4 GB of RAM or 8 GB.

It will improve performance for some programs, and you can't use even 4 GB of RAM on 32-bit. You definitely don't want 8 GB of RAM if you're just using it for gaming.

4 GB is quite sufficient.

Only get 8 GB for things like server apps or some graphics programs.

For the Q6600 vs.

E8400, it depends on how much forward compatibility you want.

The E8400 would be better for most current or very near-future games, while the Q6600 is going to be better in the medium term, as more games support quad core.

In my opinion, Quad cores now is basically just to say "My PC is better then yours cause you have a duel-core and I have a quad", When in reality not much supports quad which renders 1 or 2 of the other cores useless (to a degree) I just think future proofing now is just a waste, with the i7 on the horizon and not much things compatible with quads I would just stick to Duel core for now.

Personally I would go with the E8400, lots of room for overclocking, runs cool, uses a newer design (then the Conroe based quad core Q6600). Also I would be half tempted to have 4Gb running in a 32bit Vista OS even if it meant 0.5gb was going to waste.

The reason being is that you can still run the memory in dual channel mode and not having to worry about any of the issues you get with a 64bit O/S.

As Vista is improved and 64bit is more widely developed by programmers you can always install the 64bit version of Vista at a latter date (I believe the disc has both versions on it).

8Gb sounds good but is a complete waste of resources even if DDR2 is cheap enough to buy 8Gb. Your cutting it fine with that PSU, you might want to reconsider it (550 or 600 watt PSU is what I would go with).

I'm running E8400 and 4850GPU with 600W, works like a charm.

E8400/4GB/P5E/HD4870/620Watt and Vista 64 = everything runs smooth & clean

Good point on the release of i7.

Quad-core is good for future games, but the really good stuff is going to be the i7.

If you can stand waiting a few months, CPU prices will plummet when the i7 is released sometime in Q4.

Thank you all guys for your info. I went with a E8400, 64 bit vista and 8gb of ram.

Maybe the quad would of been better for long term, and the aim was to future proof this computer.

But i figured the E8400 would do fine for a while, with some over clocking.

And the 8gb should be future proof regardless. I was thinking that the power was a little light too.

So i've upgraded it to 600W. Thank you all for your input.

8GB will probably be good for like 3-4 years, the reason the timespan is so low is the the speed, I'm assuming the speed of the ram is 800mhz due to the amount of ram you have, Hell if you had 8GB of 1000mhz that will cost you some money. Really though, using Ram to future proof isn't really a great idea, like I said above, speeds change and that's what really counts in the end.

For example, not long ago 512MB of ram was alot, and Not long ago was 333mhz alot. But overall it is a good system, especially if you'll be doing anything with graphics and the such.

8 GB of DDR2 RAM is not going to be useful for three years, unless you don't plan to upgrade your processor.

From what I've heard, i7 will only support DDR3.

My new system is sounding more promising each day!

LoL. They havn't even started building it yet because I keep making changes to it because of what I hear on this forum.
