Conservatives Happier Than Liberals Jeanna Bryner Senior Writer LiveScience.com Wed May 7, 8:32 AM ET Individuals with conservative ideologies are happier than liberal-leaners, and new research pinpoints the reason: Conservatives rationalize social and economic inequalities. Regardless of marital status, income or church attendance, right-wing individuals reported greater life satisfaction and well-being than left-wingers, the new study found.

Conservatives also scored highest on measures of rationalization, which gauge a person's tendency to justify, or explain away, inequalities. The rationalization measure included statements such as: "It is not really that big a problem if some people have more of a chance in life than others," and "This country would be better off if we worried less about how equal people are." To justify economic inequalities, a person could support the idea of meritocracy, in which people supposedly move up their economic status in society based on hard work and good performance.

In that way, one's social class attainment, whether upper, middle or lower, would be perceived as totally fair and justified. If your beliefs don't justify gaps in status, you could be left frustrated and disheartened, according to the researchers, Jaime Napier and John Jost of New York University.

They conducted a U.S.-centric survey and a more internationally focused one to arrive at the findings. "Our research suggests that inequality takes a greater psychological toll on liberals than on conservatives," the researchers write in the June issue of the journal Psychological Science, "apparently because liberals lack ideological rationalizations that would help them frame inequality in a positive (or at least neutral) light." The results support and further explain a Pew Research Center survey from 2006, in which 47 percent of conservative Republicans in the U.S.

Described themselves as "very happy," while only 28 percent of liberal Democrats indicated such cheer. The same rationalizing phenomena could apply to personal situations as well. "There is no reason to think that the effects we have identified here are unique to economic forms of inequality," the researchers write.

"Research suggests that highly egalitarian women are less happy in their marriages compared with their more traditional counterparts, apparently because they are more troubled by disparities in domestic labor." The current study was funded by the National Science Foundation. http://news.yahoo.com/s/livescience...ierthanliberals

WOW I never realized what an unhappy sad sack I should be.

I'd better tell the bride.

Thank God someone finally clued me in.

Now I can wallow in my misery forever after, but first I think I'll go for a run, come back and have a decent lunch, play computer for a while, then watch the Lakers and MVP Kobe take on the Jazz at Staples. The Red Sox and Angels are tied for first in the AL race, and the Celtics and Lakers are both enjoying success in the playoffs (the C's got lucky last night). There certainly is room for brooding somewhere in that. Still off the butts, hurl?

I now consider myself a happy non- smoker

I now consider myself a happy non- smoker Good job...hang in there. Good thing you are a conservative and a Bush supporter.

You must be ecstatic and incredibly happy.

I now consider myself a happy non- smoker Keep your guard up, my man. I faced resurgent temptation months...even years...after quitting in '89. Not at all, now, though. dave

Quote: : Conservatives Happier Than Liberals There's an old saying we have in Texas - Ignorance is...

Um, ignorance is like when you're really stupid...

Er, dumb folks seem to be happier than other folks.

Oh, and attaboy, Hurl.

Keep it up!

It really does take a whole lot of time to escape from that habit completely.

For at least the first year, it is a day-to-day effort.

After that the urges are few, and when they come they are a great deal less persuasive than in the beginning. Living in California is a real plus.

At least there aren't dozens of smokers everywhere you turn to cause anxiety and a desire to relapse.

L] Kinda hard to be happy when you're worried about illegals running around without health insurance, our troops staying in Iraq to finish the job, Hillary and Obama killing each other, people wanting to take responsibility for themselves instead of letting the government do it for them, People passing money around without being taxed, global warming treaties left unsigned, the possibility of the SC actually requiring a valid ID in order to vote, environmental regulations that might go unsigned, and McCain smirking at the chaos going on in the primaries...

At least there aren't dozens of smokers everywhere you turn to cause anxiety and a desire to relapse. There were typically two events in which I faced the greatest temptation to light up after I'd quit: Right after a good meal and when the guys were over and we were playing cards.

This latter was really weird because they all smoked cigars (only while playing cards) and I never really got into real cigars. I don't drink beer but I'm told from my swilling friends that once you've quit smoking, drinking a beer can also facilitate some big temptations to have something to flick in your right hand. I'm reminded of the old....OLD joke where the amorous young man was plying his new bride with some get-to-know-you small talk in advance of the big event.

"Do you smoke after sex?" he asked innocently.

"I don't know," she responded, "I've never checked." hee hee hee, ho ho ho, HAW!

I'd be much happier if my only litmus test for any action or decision was "Does this impact me, now?".

I've tried this approach as it seems to work for so many Conservatives but just can't get myself to be that cold and apathetic.
