ScreenCastsOnline Forum - SCO0153 - aTV Flash for Apple TV [Extra! Only]
Time for a show with a hardware bent!
Lots of buzz around the internet about a product that enables you to "hack" your Apple TV simply and easily.
All without opening the case and potentially voiding your warranty.
The product is aTV Flash v3.0 from Applecore LLC.
The steps are this:
Buy the aTV Flash software and download to your Mac.
Download a free disk image file from Apple.
Insert a Flash USB drive on your Mac and run a script
Restore your Apple TV to factory settings
Insert the Flash USB drive into the Apple TVs USB port and reboot
And that's it!
This weeks show takes you through all these stages in detail and even shows you how to setup and transfer media to your Apple TV via FTP plus how to use some of the Applications installed as part of the aTV flash upgrade.
Please note that this show has not been sponsored or endorsed by Applecore LLC.
This show is only available to ScreenCastsOnline Extra!
Members and will be published in the next few hours.

Thanks Don,
Imagine my surprise to see the subject of this weeks show given that I only "begged" for it in the forum just last week!
Tony.

Co-incidence, pure co-incidence

Very interesting show Don, enjoyed it thoroughly.
aTV Flash looks extremely slick indeed, and very easy to do too, adding lots of very useful functionality.
It's a shame I don't have an TV to try it out and use it on.

Don, is there anyway you could post the directory structure of the root where the apps are installed?
I manually created the patchstick...which was really just running that same script you had with the aTV, I just had to find a couple extra disk images to mount during the running on the script and it only installed ssh
I added codecs, but can't test them since I can't access other files or servers.
I followed the instructions for installing other apps and copied them over, but they didn't show up.
I just wanted to verify I was sticking them in the right place and they were the right type of file.
I've been pretty busy this month so I haven't had a lot of time to continue investigating

I'm glad you did a show about the aTV Flash.
I just had to get it after I saw it mentioned on another Podcast, but by the time I could get it, they stopped selling it.
Fortunately, they brought it back in software form.
I just haven't been enjoying the Apple TV since the misTake 2 update, but with aTV Flash, I can watch shows I've previously recorded with Beyond TV and converted to DivX before it supported H.264.
I'm just hoping you can do some more shows about aTV Flash, so I can find out how to use a lot of the features.
Networking in nitoTV is one example.
I know Apple products are a networking nightmare, so I kind of expect problems there.
One benefit to aTV Flash is that I now have a software reboot, instead of having to unplug the Apple TV.
Play the wrong video file or use Couch Surfer to browse the wrong web site (usually one with Flash) and after quite a long wait, I get to see the Apple TV intro video again.
That's not really aTV Flash's fault.
It's become a regular feature since misTake 2 was released, but it happens a little more often with aTV Flash.
If anyone is on the fence about getting it, I do recommend it.
Especially if you want your Apple TV to live up to Apple's claim of "Get Apple TV and you can watch what you want, when you want, without ever leaving your sofa".
Well, the "when you want" part needs a little work since the Apple TV can't pay attention to both you and iTunes at the same time, so you'll still get those "hold on a second and stop pressing the remote button.
ITunes is tallking to me.
I'll be with you in 5-10 minutes" moments.
I really wish aTV Flash could work with the original Apple TV software, back when it worked properly, but without YouTube support.
I'm just glad the Apple TV and Mac are both wired or it would really be an all-day project just to watch a couple of shows.

Fantastic show just one question which i guess is pretty basic but i thought i would ask anyway.
You don't have to use fugu as your sftp client?
You could use transmit or captainftp or cyberduck or even the finder for that matter if you want to?
Just checking.

I tried transmit but it didn't work.
Might be that special setting you have to check off?
|
 |
You should have done this on http://ATVPatch.com for $20!!
Not $60!! They offer a way better image.and give you ore options.

Hmmmm. . .
I'm behind on my comments and I don't really think I can enter anything cogent into this discussion.
We don't currently have Apple TV (I haven't made a proper case for the expenditure), but it's on the horizon, certainly.
So the aTV Flash isn't really a concern right now.
While the show itself was informative (er--great, Don--tops, really), I'd like to consider the wider ramifications: once we have reliable Internet TV, broadcast television--even cable television--is doomed.
None too soon, in my estimation.
TV should be strictly a la carte--on demand--select your choice;
Not "Coming up next on FOX.
. ."
I seldom (once or twice a week) watch anything on scheduled TV (my wife does, but I don't go there).
As soon as (US) football season starts, I'll be spending more time in front of the TV.
For now, I prefer to watch stuff on my iMac.
In fact, we've both gotten into the habit of watching a movie once or twice a week (in less than comfortable circumstances) on my iMac in my office.
Sometimes it's a rental from Apple over iTunes, but often it's just a DVD we already own that I've ripped for the occasion.
Okay--we're old.
We've been married a long time (longer than you've guessed, I promise.
. .) and we like watching stuff like Harry Potter, Shrek, and LOTR.
Saw IX isn't on our list.
Apple TV might be a good option, but we'll need to buy a fancier TV first.
In the meantime, both of us have 24" iMacs that make things easier to manage if we want decent video.
Fun to watch, too.
It's an interesting dilemma, but we probably won't be ordering pizza with the remote.
ATV isn't a priority for us.
(Insert an obvious joke here.
. .) Cheers!
--George
