AFL determined to sink some Melbourne teams. - Aussie Phorums
While Footscray, North and Melbourne are sent to play
on cow paddovks in remote backwaters, Collingwood play
18 games on the MCG.
Yep, that's right, 18
There's only so much cash to go around, and while most
of it gets funnelled back to the richest club in
Victoria the others can take their chances and shut
their mouths untill they go broke.
|
 |
Why do you sound suprised?
Standard issue in business.
I continually hear on radio that all teams love to play The wobbles,
Im not really sure where they get that impression from.
The AFMaguire dont care really..
Its BUSINESS now, nothing to do with
sport, its BIG DOLLAR BUSINESS..
It will come a day when the results are known before the game.
Sad but
thats business.
Im enjoying watching the VFL on ABC although missed last few weeks.
Much more entertaining.

yes, but while business is business, a sporting competition should still be
as fair as possible for all teams and clearly this sort of favoritism
towards Collingwood is something that the AFL _can_ do something about

Towards Collingwood is something that the AFL _can_ do something about
When the two new teams come in and there is only a 17 round comp, then
things will be much fairer.
Every two seasons the Home/Away venues can swap so - for the first time
since 1986 - there will be balance.

Well duhh !!
OK dude, here is a challenge for you oh so bloody jealous Collingwood
hating dimwits.
You go and tell some clubs that they CANNOT play Collingwood at the MCG.
Any clubs for that matter.
You go tell Melbourne that they CANNOT play
Collingwood as a home game EVERY Queen's birthday weekend.
Go tell
Essendon that the Anzac day game should be played at the Dome.
Go tell
Geelong to play a home game against Collingwood at Kardinia Park.
Go
tell the Blues, Bulldogs, Kangaroos and the Tigers.
And see how far you
get before THEY tell you to f*ck off!!
These clubs ALL need the enormous
revenue generated by playing Collingwood at the MCG.
Go figure why
Collingwood is REQUIRED to play at the MCG (and to a lesser extent at
the Dome for teams like St Kilda, West Coast, Freo etc) so many times.
Pure logic, which I suppose, is beyond the thinking of the
great-unwashed Collingwood bashing/hating imbecilic morons!!
Geez, its much better for stupid Collingwood bashers/haters to be
thought of as bloody fools than to open their big mouths and remove any
doubt!!!

Larry, mate "Collingwood bashing" doesnt even come into this - it's a simple
fact that Collingwood are heavily favored by the AFL and the amount of games
that they get to play at the G is one of the simplest examples of that.
Something that the AFL could change, yet choose not to.
|
 |
Nice rant. Do you think Collingwood making lots of money is more important
than a fair competition?
Simple yes/no would be fine.

Dude, go ask the other clubs, THEY all want to play the 'pies at the G.
THEY ask the AFL for the choice of the draw and the AFL comply with
THEIR requests.
Go check out the FACTS for a change!!
Playing
Collingwood at the G = MONEY for the other clubs.

Collingwood V Carlton/Essendon/Richmond will always
have to be played at the MCG.
That equals 6 games per year, but Collingwood play 18
games there.

The AFL is a multi-million dollar business marketing a product based on a
obscure sport only played in one part of the planet.
It makes most of its money by having a product that convinces people to
sit in front of their TV sets consuming sponsorship messages.

Less of a sport and more of a business, as the current 20-20 thing shows.
The point is that the business issues (more consumers, more profit) now
(constantly) change the "sport" from what it once was.
Such things don't seem to occur as much in sports without significant
business forces controlling them.
And define "success" in sports, is it something like having more people
sitting on their arses cheering the medals Aussies win at the Olympics
(at an average cost to the taxpayer of ~$37M per Gold medal, apparently),
or is it getting more people off their backsides actually participating
in sports?
not-gold/2008/05/17/1210765260664.html?page=fullpage#contentSwap2)
If the AFL's "success" means less unprofitable Melbourne clubs in
existence for the sake of more eyeballs in other states watching their
product, then they may well succeed.
The problem is that Victoria is still the foundation of the competition,
and if enough people are lost to the game here then the AFL better have
other areas up and running to compensate.
