American Idol Acoustic Influence
I just read an article on the influence of acoustic, singer/songwriter's on this year's season of American Idol.
The author was talking about how two of this year's contestants, Jason Castro and Brooke White, were bringing this type of music to the forefront and introducing it to a new generation.
She pointed out how many of the other contestants could "outshow" Jason and Brooke by belting out ballads but they outlasted those contestants by taking a "folksy", simpler, purer approach.
Jason finished 4th, Brooke 5th....winning alot of fans with their new, "old sounds".
The author speculated that in these crazy, hectic times people are yearning for a peace and calmness this type of music often provides.
She pointed out how many of today's chart-topping musicains, even on the Pop Charts, are acoustic-based and how this type of music is making a huge comeback.
Jason and Brooke are hitting 50 cities this summer as part of the American Idol Tour....I'm guessing they'll be using their guitars and that he'll be breaking out his ukele and she'll probably be sitting at the piano, as well.
It'll be interesting to see how this "plays" to massive, arena crowds.
It'll also be interesting to see if a trend develops with more acoustic-based performers like Jason and Brooke doing well on shows like "American Idol", "American's Got Talent", etc.
Here's hoping

Laurie, I think that Jason and Brooke did bring more fans to acoustics.
I know that the main person I'm going to the AI tour to see, is Jason Castro.
Cannotwait for his first CD to come out.
I have the feeling he is going to be big...very big.

I love that American Idol allowed the instuments this season, thus allowing more music with artists like Jason Castro and Brooke White to shine.
My personal favorite this year was Jason Castro and I am patiently waiting for that first album to be released, meanwhile I will visit his Myspace page and other fan sites to get my daily fix of Jason Castro music....

I think the fact that AI decided to allow instruments this year, is the main reason why I decided to watch this season.
Last season was boring to me, and I really wasn't gonna tune in this year, but then heard that contestants would be allowed to play instruments and I got excited.
I've always like the acoustic sound, it is so intimate.
I thank the heavens that I decided to watch this year, otherwise I would have missed out on the best American Idol contestant to ever grace the show.
I also never would have discovered artist like Ray Lamontagne and Jack Johnson.
I am finally enjoying music again.:)♥

Laurie,
Jason and Brooke really renewed my interest in music this year.
I went back and listened to Carly Simon, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, Jeff Buckley, Leonard Cohen, and picked up an interest in Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, Ray LaMontaigne...all because of Idol this year, especially Jason Castro.
It's so interesting to get back to just the music...the performer and the instument.
Also, I am picking up the guitar again and the piano.
I haven't felt like singing and playing in a long, long time.
Many of my friends agree with me about this year's Idol and the introduction of instruments.
There is such an impact, even with the sale of ukes, Luna guitars etc.
The other interesting development that I see this year is really taking the older tunes and making them current.
I noticed it much more this year and I think that is because there are several singer/songwriters with very unique styles that could make the music their own.
Can't wait to see Jason, Brooke, and the rest of the very talented Idol crew on tour in NJ...Newark and AC!!!
I think it will be a trend as we can already see developing at Canadian Idol!

If the people in marketing want a trend, they simply usurp the symbology and trappings of a given musical genre;
This phenomenon is perversely manifest in country, rock, jazz, and R&B at the very least.
Our individual hopes are not at all relevant- it's a purely business decision.
In a related non sequitur: I feel sorry for Chuck Barris at times like these.
Today's alleged talent shows are like The Gong Show crossed with The Lawrence Welk Show;
Not only has Mr. Barris brainchild been coopted (most likely at his exclusion) but it has been utterly perverted.
