General Smallville Season Eight Thread (SPOILERS) - The Observation Lounge

Unmarked spoilers for aired episodes, but mark your spoilers for unaired episodes. My initial thought after watching the teaser and opening credits: Cassidy Freeman, a.k.a.

Tess Mercer, is a cutie.

I am so shallow. I had no idea that of the original cast, only Clark and Chloe would be back this season or, conversely, that Lana and Lex would no longer be regulars.

Getting rid of Whitney after the first season was no big loss and even Pete taking off for parts unknown did little to hurt the series.

Adding Lois as a regular helped, plus Jimmy Olson as a recurring character (has Aaron Ashmore been a regular before this season?), worked well. But losing Pa Clark, then Ma Clark, then Pa Luther and now Lana and Lex?

Plus, it looks like Laura Vandervoort is gone after only one season (anyone now why?).

Hrm.

Hrm. That puzzled me, too.

I remember reading a year ago that she had signed a two year contract, so I thought she'd be around for the full eighth season.

I'm kinda bummed that she'll be gone. At least Chloe is still around.

I never was that fond of Chloe.

She never was a part of the superman sage and making her a Lois Lane clone was/is just wrong.

I could still live with it when she was working at the Torge, but ever since she's working at the planet it's just silly and stupid.

So if they would just drop her and bring Kara back I'm all for it

My review of "Odyssey" is now online.

If this episode is representative of the rest of the season, it's going to suck.

Hard. I can only hope it ends up being more like Enterprise's "Storm Front" episodes: painful, but necessary to tie up unwanted (by the writers) loose ends and put the characters where they need to be for the season to get going in a new direction.

Sorry about the delay (and it's not my best work), but my review of "Plastique" is now online.

At least it doesn't look like I missed out on any scintillating conversation about the episode.

The "freak of the week" was so, so boring.

The only redeeming aspect of that storyline was the introduction of Tess Mercer's "Injustice League" at the end of the episode.

Otherwise, this was really another set-up episode for the rest of the season, so I can give it a pass for not being all that interesting.

I honestly did not miss Lana at all and to be quite honest, Tess seems to be a fine substitute for Lex in terms of being the head of an evil corporation.

Her interaction with Clark is hardly as wonderfully subtle, though.

You know how sometimes when you really don't have much to say, you should probably just shut the **** up?

Reviewers don't have that option. Toxic Review This post has been edited by Diesel Micky Dolenz: October 6, 2008, 04:23 PM

Take it for what its worth: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plastique_(comics) As for this season so far, I've been impressed....there's been a new kind of life added to the show, and I think people are thriving in their roles.

The "Reporter Clark" thing was forced, but I think it was something that needed to be done.

And I absolutely love adding Hartley to the main cast.

Apparently, the new producers of Smallville are already planning a ninth season, despite what I have read in the past about the current season being the last.

They are also working on a proposed series, The Graysons, about the childhood of Dick Grayson (aka Robin).

Read a statement from Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders at KryptonSite. Considering how much work went into getting Allison Mack back for Season Eight, it seems unlikely that anyone will want to return for a ninth year.

Is it just my faulty recollection, or has Tom Welling indicated that he does not want to continue for another season?

Well I think most people have assumed that, since Tom and Erica's contracts are ending, this will be the last season.

But considering their inability to get Michael Rosenbaum to return, they might have done some kind fo deal to get him to return for a season nine in some capacity. Think about it...they'd really only need Tom and Erica back....maybe Jimmy.

Reintroduce Martha and Perry White (a married couple so there's a chance they're a package deal)...keep some of the Justice League...bring Lex back...and you have a season of Metropolis. Not sure if this is the right place to discuss The Graysons, but my thoughts are that the Dick Grayson character deserves its own venue....but this isn't the way to do it.

It's gonna be very odd to watch a show knowing that the majority of the main characters are going to be brutally murdered at some point.

Of course, a Nightwing show would be very interesting (even if they took a "no costume" approach).

You'd have a Batman show where it makes sense for Batman not to be there...and you could pick apart the rogue's gallery as much as you could with people coming to Bludhaven.

He was a circus performer, right?

So, what, every week he and his family and the circus company travel to a new city and give a show or two?

Is anyone else bored to tears with the Chloe/Jimmy storyline?

Or Jimmy calling Clark C.K.?

Or Jimmy? I love every scene with Tess Mercer.

What a delightfully dark character.

Just like Lex, only hotter.

And The Graysons is pre-pre-pre-cancelled (the pilot script was never even written!) according to Variety.

Just like Lex, only hotter. I've never been that interested in Jimmy Olsen or any storyline he's been in.

While I should applaud TPTB for moving a relationship along for a change, Jimmy and Chloe have zero chemistry.

The fact that Lois didn't believe that Chloe really loved Jimmy suggests that even the writers must be aware of this. As for Tess, I'm warming to the character, but not so much the actress, unless you consider my thinking she's less bad than she started out as "warming." BTW, my review of "Bloodline" is now online.
