Chris Paul Tribute to a Fan - Footballguys Forums
Chris Paul will honor a boy whose wish to see the Hornets went unfulfilledQuote: Cancer victim tribute afoot Thursday, May 08, 2008 By Katy Reckdahl Staff writer Before tonight's playoff game, New Orleans Hornets superstar point guard Chris Paul will write the name "Brian" on his shoes, paying tribute to an 8-year-old fan who died Monday night before he could meet his basketball hero.
Brian, who had cancer, wore his Chris Paul jersey nonstop, said Michael McMyne, president of A Child's Wish of Greater New Orleans, an all-volunteer nonprofit that helps fulfill the wishes of about 100 critically ill Louisiana children each year.
McMyne asked that Brian's last name not be used to respect the privacy of the grieving family.
Brian's wish was simple: He wanted to go to a Hornets game.
So McMyne got him tickets to Monday night's playoff game against the San Antonio Spurs.
But at the last minute, a friend of Brian's family called to cancel.
The boy had been rushed to the hospital with a high fever, she said.
He died hours later.
In his final weeks, Brian told his family that he knew he was going to heaven and that he wanted to meet Jesus wearing his Chris Paul jersey.
Someone within the Hornets organization sent around an e-mail telling Brian's story.
It caught the eye of Paul and Hornets owner George Shinn.
Both cried.
"It was very touching to me.
Tears welled up in my eyes," said Shinn, who sent flowers and a letter to the family and offered to help with funeral costs.
The family, overwhelmed with grief, was touched by his kindness but declined.
The location and time of the funeral also are private.
Shinn and his wife hoped to attend the funeral with Paul and his parents.
But the team will be on road at the time, so that isn't possible, Shinn said.
The family plans to bury Brian in his favorite jersey, as he requested.
Footwear tributes aren't new, Shinn said.
But usually the name is directly connected to the player.
His mother. A family member.
A favorite coach.
"The NBA allows you to do that, to honor that person," Shinn said.
Shinn has never before seen a player write a fan's name on his footwear, "particularly a fan that the player hadn't even met," he said.
The tribute is "above and beyond imagination," McMyne said.
"This genuinely heartfelt response by Chris Paul made this delicate family feel fortunate as they grieve their angel."
Just awesome.

Honestly, I had lost all interest in the NBA, but I must say bringing the Hornets to N.O.
Got me back into it a little bit.
And this year, I have been much more interested in them, particularly because of CP.
He seems like a class act.
I was hoping he'd win the MVP, as I thought he really deserved it.

Was a fan of his since Wake Forest, and what he has done this year is nothing short of amazing.
Seems like a great guy!!
Love these stories, espically the ones on video.

Not surprising at all, paul is a fantastic person.
The piece on paul and his relationship with his grandfather that espn ran 5 or so years ago was extremely touching.

This story is very touching, but I still have a hard time liking Paul.
It seems like everyone completely forgets the guy has a ridiculous temper.
He punched Julius Hodge in the sack during a game when nothing physical had been done to instigate it.

I didn't hear/see that story about the Hodge sack incident, but if he didn't do anything to physically provoke CP, you'd think he must have said something pretty vile to warrant getting a sack punch.

It was in college.
It was either the final game of the regular season.
Paul was coming around a screen or cutting or something and just threw a punch right into Hodge's manstuff.
Hodge could have been talking all game, but otherwise Paul was physically unprovoked.
He only got a one game suspension too, which I couldn't believe.
I think ESPN had an article the other day about Paul's temper.
I'll check for it.

I remember the piece about Paul.
It was an ESPN article on Bowen being dirty.
It had some youtube clips.
One of them was a tussle between Paul and Bowen where Paul punched Bowen.
Then another vid had Paul punching Hodge in the midsection.

I understand that no one is perfect, and Paul does do a lot of really good things as this article indicates, but I just have a hard time respecting anyone that immeadiatly resorts to a first strike crotch punch.

So he is writting a kids name on his shoes for one game?
He is not visiting the other kids on the cancer ward, denoting a game check to cancer research or a Ronald McDonald House, devoting his summer to raising funds, just writting the name down?
Good for him I suppose if the gesture gives the grieving parents some solace, but I would not canonize him for the ten second effort and gesture.
He does seem a decent enough kid and a brilliant ball player.

Apparently you are unaware of what he does for the community of N.O.
And his hometown.

Yes I am.
TTat said this thread was not remotely about that.
This thread was for paying tribute for a multimillionaire for writing a stranger's first name on his shoe.
Nice enough, I suppose, if it relieves some grief, but an effortless and more or less meaningless gesture.
For such I might give the guy a nod, but I find much greater reaction kind of grotesque.
If this is one small, barely noteworthy kindness by a good human being I suppose that is worth noting.
The fawning just struck me odd.
Go ahead and educate me if you wish, I like stories about good guys.
In fact I opened this thread hoping to find just that so it would be appropriate.
