Canon G7 Owners?: Canon Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review
I'm considering buying the Canon G7, mainly so I can use it with my 580EX II for the laughs.
How does this camera fair image-quality wise?
(not compared to a 450D, but other compacts).
Thanks for any info.

And quite a few superb images have come from this platform.
Granted, there is no RAW capabilities, but when you team it up with a good flash unit (TTL dedicated flash), the combo will net you truly outstanding shots (if you did everything correctly of course).
Both the G7 and G9 are virtually the same as far as appearance goes with the exception that the G7 has a silver ring where the lens meets the body, and the G9 has a black ring.
The key here is to get a G7 in superb condition, if you can find one.

As always - good shooting....

Are that is very sturdy, iso dial, total manual control, excellent size and more than enough zoom for my needs.
On the cons list: too much noise on iso 800, dust inside the lens.
No raw (but no problem for me).
All in all: I love it and would buy a G10 only if it has a better iso 800 peformance.
Iso 800 no pp at all

Thanks for the info.
At that size the ISO1600 photo looks 'acceptable'.
I'll be trying to keep between 80-400 ISO as my 580EX II will be attached for low light situations.
I was going with the G7 over G9, as I'm assuming noise and LOSS of detail from that small sensor with more MPs would be a problem...

The G7 does RAW quite well.
Put a few files onto an SD card and you can shoot RAW whenever you want.
See:
http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK
I convert the .CRW files the G7 makes into DNG using DNG converter, then process with any DNG compatible program.
Still has about noise, particularly noticable at higher ISO, BUT color noise is MUCH reduced, as in little or no magenta mottling in the shadows.

One thing to watch for that varied from one g7 to another is misalignment of the optical viewfinder.
Mine is low relative to what is actually shot so I tended to get subjects with the bottom cropped off.
Comparisons here showed that different people had varying misalignments on their ovfs.
(That and the high noise level meant the g7 drove me to get a dslr.)

Thats a bit of a shame, having such an error in an expensive camera.
I was hoping now that the price has dropped, it would be a good carry around camera when I am unable to haul my dSLR with lenses around.
...That and I got kicked out of a venue, because they saw my SLR, and instantly thought I was a pro...

Image quality very good up to ISO 100.
Good at indoor with ISO up to 200.
Ok quality at indoor up to 400.
for very lowlight there is always ISO 3200 ^_^
Video quality very good even at 1024x768.
What I hate from this camera is Dust that eventually will shows up on your photos.

I really enjoy my G7
- I am NOT going to replace it with another compact G9/G10
(If it broke tomorrow - I would proberly get the Panasonic Lumix LX3)
G7 performs really well in full auto mode.
And if you can master full manuel you can get even more, and with raw a small bit more.
However I dont use the RAW files that much, as the JPEGs directly from the G7 tend to be very good.
The image quality is VERY good, color is nice.
I get my pictures printed at a photolab, and I often get A4 size prints.
My walls dont call for A3's, so I havnt tried that size.
It is a lovely carry around camera.
I am going to get a 50D with very good lenses as a backup !

Can you please explain this dust issue?
Is it dust in the lens?
On the sensor? Or just in the viewfinder?

I believe it has horrible low light capabilities.
In fact, you can not use it to take indoor photos unless you are right on top of the subject.
I bought it to supplement my slr when I want to go to a family event or other indoor function and I have found it to be so inadequate, I plan to sell it on ebay and try again.

I bought my G7 around March 2007 & the only problems I have had was a smudge or something that got inside my sensor(or something on my lens that I could not clean).
I sent it to Canon under warranty & they got it taken care of.
This camera performs flawlessly for me - It is my back-up a lot of the time to my 30D - unless I need Wide capabilities & out comes my 300D with my 17-40L.
For Magustin - I have had NO problems shooting in low light at all.
IF you get to know the camera & what it can do for you.
I shoot 85% in TV Mode(unless I give the camera to someone else to take pix of me & my family) then it goes to the Green mode.
I always set my camera in Neutral for indoor shots, & fire away - IS is Always 'On' & I can bump it up to ISO 200 & get great results, especially if there is some ambient light coming in thru the doors or windows as well.
Check out my G7 Gallery on pbase, especially this one: http://www.pbase.com/hurtman/images_indoors then draw your own conclusions.
I must admit, I want to try using my tripod more for better results.
When I am shooting outdoors, I usually shoot at ISO 80 or 100 & set the camera to Positive Film - for people shots, I switch it to Neutral or turn My Colors off.
The only reason I would want a G10 is for the wider angle lens.

I have NO dust issues at all, had the G7 since April 2007, it is used almost on a daily basis, in a bad week it only get used one or two days.
I mainly carry the camera in my pockets (front pocket of my jeans or a jacket)
Re: Lowlight performance...
It's a P&S - use flash.
The build-in flash is a bit harsh , unless you use a home made difuser.
( ie half a tabletennis ball, it really improves, but at high expense of flash range).
I have seen some compagny who is selling defusers for P&S on the internet, but I cant recall the web site name.
External flash is just great.

Would you consider selling it to me?
I realised the low light issues.
I think my 580EX II will compensate.

Sorry - but I wont.
For my compact camera needs the G7 fullfill them all.
(well almost, I miss wide angle but not eneugh to let go of the zoom range)
Selling it would force me in to buying a new compact.
