5D MkII does HD Video. [Page 1]: Canon EOS 50D - 10D Forum: Digital Photography Review

I can't wait for the 60D. I'm sorry for all the video haters out there. -- Elwood.

A lot of people were critical of the video feature Nikon introduced recently..now just wondering what canon fans has to say :)

The details of its new features are here: http://www.dpreview.com/news/0809/08091705canon_5dmarkII.asp and here: http://www.usa.canon.com/...

.../pressrelease/20080917_5dmkii.html

There were a lot of (Quote: ) "Real Photographers" who slagged-off the Nikon video feature. It's a shame the 50D didn't have it, but it gives me time to save for the 60D.

I skipped the 30 and 40D's, and same for the 50D, but the 60D with video....sweet! -- Elwood.

Yeah, take me out and put me on an ice floe!

Call me a purist or whatever but video doesn't belong on a dslr.

I guess this is all the more reason to give the 5D a serious look.

I really wonder if the 50D can record HD video as well.

Live View is what the video is built off of, just piping the resulting data to a file which can theoretically be done in software. Wonder if a firmware update is all it would take. Thoughts? -Kones -- Image control: Zoom out | Zoom 100% | Zoom in | Expand / Contract | New window

Offer me a 5D Mk II without the video feature at exactly the same price and I would still buy it.

Why? Because I would never use it! Quote: : >

Just because you never got a video with your camera, but once you've tried a HD movie with your camera, you'll wonder how did you live without that extra :)

I can borrow a broadcast quality HD video cam from a friend if I want to use one.

I have never considered how I lived without a video function on my 40D! Quote: : >

Function on my 40D! > But then you are carrying around a lot more gear than just a DSLR.

I think your missing the point about having two in one. Im sure we will see loads of people moaning about Canon putting video in the camera, mainly from people who don't want it but that doesn't seem to stop people from buying a camera with a print button or full auto, even though they never use it. Canon are following a trend, that being advance and i for one am glad they did this because it will show they are moving forward and listening to the people (not the minority here). IMHO fo course. -- Dave. Gallery @ http://davepearce.smugmug.com

If my 40D did had video, I would still not us it.

If you buy a small memory card based camcorder, the size of it would be less than a small lens.

This is not a lot of extra gear to carry in your bag.

If you buy a dSLR, it is not because of the video function.

I don't even use live view. -Roger

-Roger I carry a Canon HF10 in my camera bag.

Its about the same length as my 17-55IS but takes up less room.

Ideal for days out. Unfortunately i find it difficult to shoot video and take stills with my 40D at the same time (or at least have both ready to shoot). Those people saying video is a gimmick are obviously the ones who dont want or need it, fair enough but you aren't speaking for everyone and Canon know this. Want a pro, stills only camera?

Well Canon make them as well. -- Dave. Gallery @ http://davepearce.smugmug.com

Thoughts? even if that's "all it would take", why would they do it? why would chevy swap out the 4-cyl engine from its cavalier and throw in an LS7 V8 motor for you?

An engine swap is all it would take... no they want you to buy the corvette if you want that feature. it's not a perfect similie, but it's the same logic -- movie feature is a feature you pay money for.

In fact, here you can watch movie clips supposedly coming off a 40D sensor: http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/40D >

Wonder if a firmware update is all it would take. Sure, but don't expect it from Canon.

But if the CHDK attempt for 40D works out, then I'm sure we will be seeing CHDK releases for the other line of dSLRs as well. -- Regards, /Roger Image control: Zoom out | Zoom 100% | Zoom in | Expand / Contract | New window

My 40D is terrific and gives me everything I need and then some.

Greater mp just means I'd also need a new computer to handle the much larger files.

:-p > I'm sorry for all the video haters out there. No hate, just not a feature I'd ever use.

YMMV.

I have seen a sample video from a 40D with hacked firmware.

The pixels where not yet in the correct order and without sound a video mode is not very interesting for me.

But video is definitely a almost cost free extra for a modern DSLR.

Not that I miss the video fuction in my 30D BUT: Seems like the life cycle of a DSLR will have to be shorter and shorter, I guess almost like the P&S cameras.

Due to competition.

18 months will probably be too long for the 50D before the next upgrade.

In about a year I would gess that the "60D" will be released with movie mode and the new battery that the 5D mkII has + a few more things.

All because competition is increasing.

Also the 5D (mkII) has finally got competition so the price and life cycle of these cameras wont be 2-3 years but rather 1-2 in the future.

Perhaps same goes for the 1D's. -- // Robert http://www.pbase.com/robban72

Seing how obscessive people here are, I guess we will all turn into Stanley Kubricks now and examine every single frame of video that we shoot.

12 minute video at 30 fps - that will give me 200,000 frames to review.

I'm up for it!

For those naysayers, HD movie does intrigue me.

The reason why we take photographs are because we want to be creative.

We play with HDR by compositing multiple sequences to create dramatic images.

We use fisheye because it gives an alternative view.

Why can't we do a little movie as well? I doubt I'll be any good at it but it's worth a try. I've been visiting this site daily to see what other people has come up with on the Nikon D90 even though it has it's limitations, but remember Nikon is the first generation.

It can only get better from here on. http://vimeo.com/d90 Check it out and you'll be impressed. Quote: : >
