Blu Ray Burner: Mac Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review

I just got a MacPro after the PC that I built bit the dust.

I would like to add a Blu Ray burner like I had on my PC and wanted to know if anyone else had done that too.

How easy was it? Which one did you get?

Do you need a SATA port like that Sony Blu Ray burner on the PC? TIA -- George Tseng NAPP PPA Pictage.com Serious Amateur Photographer/Previous Nikon user, now Canon and Epson User, Saint Louis, MO Equipment on Profile http://www.pbase.com/GTseng67

Easiest would be to get an external enclosure with either firewire, USB or esata connectors for the burner. if you want to mount it internally, you'll need to tap into the unused extra SATA ports on the MB. There's 5 reports on the page below after a search for blu-ray, ide (serial ATA onboard), MacPro tower http://forums.xlr8yourmac.com/drivedb/search.drivedb.lasso also see http://www.newertech.com/products/esata_cable.php http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/...

Let us know if you're successful with the blueray.

I've found Apple to be more focused in it's approach to computing than PCs and as such has less flexibility. Blueray could be one of the unsupported areas. REd

Http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Panasonic/SW5583BKMP/ Able to burn 25GB on a single layer Blu-ray disc and up to 50GB on a double layer Blu-ray disc, the Panasonic SW-5583-C has created a future for high density and secure computer and data storage including backup, high definition movies, photos and anything else you can imagine. If you need a SATA internal/external card, they sell them for the Mac Pro for $25: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/MPQXES2/ I wanted to do this, but then I found out that the TDK 50GB 2x Single-sided, Double-layer Recordable ("write once") Blu-ray Disc (TDKBDR50A) cost $45./each plus the high cost of the drive makes it quite an expensive backup plan. You can get the Blu-Ray drive that only play movies, but do not burn discs for about $175. Macsales.com is a good place.

Let me know how it works out, if you do it. P.S.

You may also search for LG's drives.

I think they were coming out with a few new models, but you know Pioneer is one of the best.

Here is what I have done.

I cannabalized my Sony BluRay disc player from my PC and installed it in the free optical drive.

I had to use adapters for the power source and then snake in a SATA to SATA cable.

The on board SATA port is somewhat hard to access but did it carefully with an needle nosed pliers.

Good thing one of the ends was preshaped in an 90 degree angle.

Well, the hardware is recognized in the SATA list under my Mac, but is not usable due to driver problems.

I then rebooted under XP and installed the driver that came from Sony and still no go.

Looks like I have to pony up $450 for another drive. -- George Tseng NAPP PPA Pictage.com Serious Amateur Photographer/Previous Nikon user, now Canon and Epson User, Saint Louis, MO Equipment on Profile http://www.pbase.com/GTseng67

Quite an expensive backup plan. single layer discs are only $10 already though. it took DVDs a lot longer than this to drop to that price (I remember when they were $30 a pop for a single layer) in less than a year, we'll be seeing reasonably priced spindles of single layers and some serious price drops in the double layers
