Canon Addiction Poll: Canon Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review
So here I am waiting for my next dose of Canon.
While I love the art of photography (I prefer the art of composing and shooting more than the art of post processing,) I've found that I can buy new Canon cameras or lenses, use them for a while, and then sell them on Craigslist after I've had my fix.
I'm a Canonholic.
I've kept most of the lenses, but sold most of the cameras, as you might expect.
The G1 and the D30 with the 17-40 f4L were my first cameras from Canon and they started this addiction.
The waiting, the anticipation, the speculation of what's coming...
The threads of possible new digicams and DSLRs, considering buying other brands...
It's all part of the addiction.
I choose to look at it as a positive addiction.
I'm so excited to be alive during this transition from film to digital and see the new developments.
I realize the damn things are just tools, but I can't help wanting to check out the new technology.
So here I am, right before what promises to be the best Photokinia in history and I'm feeling good!
I'm hoping to see the evolution of the new G and the 5D.
Anyone else find themselves addicted to Canon?
Tell your story.
Dave

I don't know if I am a Canon addict, but Canon addicted me to cameras.
My first was a S45, a 4mp wonder from 2002.
I carried it everywhere for about two years until I got the S70 in 2005.
My G7 and 30D go everywhere with me now, and I am eagerly awaiting the entrance of the new full frame camera(s).
To me, very few cameras' image quality compare with the S45's and S70's.

I actually prefer Nikon.
That is why all my DSLR's are Nikon, plus I have some older Olympus P&S'.
But when Canon came out with the TX1, I just had to have one!
It was a unique camera, with unique features.
It is my taken anywhere camera, and great as a vacation camera.
Easy to get that elusive shot due to its small size and easy concealability.
My take....
Canon TX1 Photos

I prefer Canon since I'm a hybrid enthusiast.
I like something that takes good video and good stills, has good sound, and is quick into action.
I have two nice Canons right now, an A710 and a TX1.
Both are great for certain things.
I guess what I'm hoping for is an A660 that zooms during HD video and has decent zoom.
In other words, the guts of a TX1 in an A series camera with a viewfinder.
These new digitals continue to amaze me and I can't wait to see what Canon announces in the next week or two.

My first megapixel cam was the S50 and i loved it..
It stood out from the competition when i bought it and canon has remained on the cutting edge when it comes to digital imaging..
I got a G7 last year and have never regretted it..
i will continue to watch and consider canon products above all else..

Started with a A400-replaced with a A410 (whuch got broken), then went to Sony and Kodak before going back to a Canon:a A580 which is now my main camera (still have the 2 other non-Canon cameras).

I use and love my my Canon P&S SD1000, Nikon SLRs D70 and D200 and I still use my Olympus C-2100 Uzi super zoom with a Hoya R72 infrared filter for infrared...
I love Canons P&Ss because of the CHDK no other brand has (that I know of), the small take everywhere size of the Elph and the fact that I had an S400 for over 4 years and when it developed a problem with the sensor they replaced it for free with an updated model, the SD1000...after owning the camera for over 4 years.
That kind of customer service won me over...

I received a letter from Canon a couple of years ago saying that I had never cashed a $100 rebate check sent to me a couple of years earlier.
They requested that I sign an enclosed form and return and they would re-issue the check.
I did and they did.
I will always buy Canon whenever their products are competitive.
I love my TX1 and my A710.

What's "CHDK"?
P.S.
My S-410 still lives in my car door.

Limiting yourself to just one brand really can limit your capabilities.
I believe that all brands have wonderful instruments, so whenever Canon, Nikon, and Olympus...and now Panasonic come up with new releases, it catches my attention.
And it's a good feeling knowing that whatever brand I pick up, I will get the best results possible.

I'm not pro canon!
I've owned other camera's in the past such as Sony as well as Olympus and loved them.
I try not to limit myself to any one brand name since I know they all deserve to be looked at.
I may be Canon today, and Fugi tomorrow, or Olympus next year.
I go where the camera is, not the brand name of the camera.

I had the S400 so I know why you still like the 410.

Point well taken!
However when you have thousands invested in lenses, and DSLRs changing systems will incur a loss.
I've never been sorry that I chose Canon to invest in.
According to a recent news article, over 70% of the cameras used by the press photographing the Olympics were Canon.
Apparently, the majority of professionals at those events also preferred Canon.
Did Canon have a full frame sensor almost 3 years before Nikon?
My very first digicam was the Olympus C-2020, which was a gift from my dad.
I suppose it was really the one that got me to consider a switch from film to digital.
I don't think you should buy Canon, unless you want to.
But I'm sure glad I do.

LOL Dave, I will buy a sigma lens just as fast as I will buy a canon lens if I like it's output.
And there are some sigma's out there that are pretty nice for lenses that fit on the Canon.

Currently own six digital Canon's: D30 with four lenses, S3, SD800, and SD200, S400, and S410.
Also own an APS Elph.
I used to own a Canon A40 (first digital Canon) and an S1 IS.
Next up: the SX10 or SX110 if not a G7 or 9.

...but I hope they come out with a large CCD (or just low pixel density with higher dynamic range) wide lens competitor for the Sigma DP1 and Pan LX3.
Then I would definitely get one of those.
That is what the G10 should have been.
If only it had been 10MP instead of 14.7....
Or the SX10 dropped to 7-8MP...
The new wide lenses are awesome.

Hi Dave,
Thanks for giving me a chance to confess.
For about 30 years I have always felt that Canon gave me best what I wanted in a camera.
My first Canon was the SLR Canon EF back in 1977.
After various other SLRs it felt like a brick and oozed quality.
Then an A1, the first and i.m.o.
Best "multi-automat".
Yet another first for Canon I believe was the mode wheel on the EOS range from the late 80's.
Nothing could match it for ease and elegance of control.
This is still the case.
My first digital was the S45 in 2002 because it had this mode wheel.
All other compacts were a nightmare to control manually.
I feel Canon was about the only compact camera manufacturer who took the serious photographer who wanted a bit of control seriously.
The S45 images of 4 mP were awesome and I believe "clearer" than the mP monsters of today (and I'm talking about 11x14" enlargements).
Through the last years I have not found any compact cameras that could match the A-, S- and G- ranges for possibilities and ease of control.
I.e. Canon has always taken the "serious" photographer who uses a compact seriously.
Quality was always top, perhaps only just topped by Fuji at high ISO - but the Fuji cameras were, for me, no good to handle (controls and OVF).
Now Panasonic is apparently coming close to Canon compact features and quality, but I still like Canon because I have liked their cameras best for several decades.
I am happily using the G7 as standard and my old S80 as wideangle and backup camera.
Still nothing from any other manufacturer of compacts feels more than a "real camera" than these beauties.
Cheers, Ralph

I am addicted to cameras, in general.
I actually don't favour one brand over another.
My SLR "system" is Canon, but that's simply because I bought an Elan back in 1995, and once you start buying lenses, well, the rest is academic.
I have a Nikon FE, and a Contax 159 that predate the Canon, as well as 40+ rangefinders and assorted other cameras of various makes.
Personally, I think people spend too much time arguing about what the "best" cameras are, and not enough time taking photographs.

I like photography, and don't give a flying hoot what brand I use.
Brand cliques/wars are silly.
