LX3 and Photoshop: Panasonic Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review

Are Adobe likely to support the LX3 in Camera Raw in CS3, or will we be forced to buy CS4 to get Camera Raw support?

Be forced to buy CS4 to get Camera Raw support? The very same question that I was involved in just a day or two ago. I had a couple or so actual LX3 RAW-type files made available to d/load and I just wanted to see what they were like.

I have the LX2 and RAW files are OK and instantly recognised in CS3 and passed to Camera Raw.. Alas , the LX3 - you may well know - are NOT the same designation as the LX2 , and are just not as yet recognised in Camera Raw. It was said, in a response in the thread I was using ..

That as expected, Adobe rarely alter their program for just ONE new type , so we may just have to wait until they think it worthwhile to amend Camera Raw to support the LX3 and perhaps one or two others that come up with a different RAW file. -- /eric-UK Image control: Zoom out | Zoom 100% | Zoom in | Expand / Contract | New window

To answer your question you will not have to buy CS4 as ACR is a separate update and you get those with your CS3 license .

. . at least so far you do.

Their latest update was July of this year ACR 4.5. -- Bob Corson Some of my photos: http://bcorson.zenfolio.com/ Image control: Zoom out | Zoom 100% | Zoom in | Expand / Contract | New window

I read a comment a couple of weeks ago on the Adobe Photoshop forum by someone from Adobe, and he said that since ACR was updated quite recently, we should not expect another update for some time.

What's "some time"?

Who knows... My guess is a couple of months.

The update would include the LX3, the G10, and other cameras with RAW that are being introduced at Photokina.

When it comes, I'm sure it will be compatible with CS3--they wouldn't dare make owners of relatively inexpensive digicams having to buy CS4! Bob

Use the Adobe DNG converter to convert any RAW or NEF files to DNG, then you can use it in PS CS2 and 3. Louis

Whether you will have to upgrade to CS4 to get LX3 support is dependent on when CS4 is released.

If it is released before November, than you might have to get CS4.

But, I think that the most likely situation is another round of ACR releases for CS3. -- >

Louis When you refer to the RAW files as such , are you just using the 'term' RAW in general ?

.. because the real trouble seems to revolve around the fact that LX3 RAW files are designated .RW2 ...

And being a somerwhat different make-up than many other RAW - even the LX2 type ..

THAT is why they are presently not recognised by near every software except appparaently the Silkypix that comes with the camera .. Very frustrating - as it means that if you have an LX3 and want to pass any true RAW files to a friend or other person , who DOESN'T have the LX3 , there's little he can do about it, as he'll likely not have Silkypix. Or even if you d/load any true LX3 RAW files (as I've done) you still cannot do anything with them..darn it !!! -- /eric-UK Image control: Zoom out | Zoom 100% | Zoom in | Expand / Contract | New window

But remember that when Adobe updated from CS2 to CS3, the next ACR update only worked with CS3, not CS2.

This left many with CS2 and a camera whose raw capability had just appeared on the latest ACR very upset at the prospect of having to upgrade to CS3 to use the necessary version of ACR or at the least convert to DNG first. -- Malcy

That's what I'm thinking.

Might hang on a while before I order an LX3. Quote: : >

All is not lost for new LX3 owners.

Silkypix is a very capable RAW developer that comes with the camera.

The problem with it is that it is translated from Japanese and the user interface and documentation are hard to figure out.

Once you master the program, it is very powerful and will do the same jobs as Photoshop or Lightroom.

That is not the best scenario but it works.

I can't remember ever giving a friend a photo that was still in RAW format.

That is a little like giving someone a cake as a bowl of batter. --

That is a little like giving someone a cake as a bowl of batter. I suppose it has to be called "unusual" since it isn't really a daily happening of any sort ... But I don't think it can be thought of as so unique ..

There are few LX3's about as yet ..

And a LOT of interested , maybe want-to-be owners ..

And if a friend has the camera it may not be unusual to ask for an original RAW from it , that he can then edit as he wishes or thinks fit - maybe quite differently than another person..

But without the donee having a program , he just cannot do that - so he is unable to do any personal test at all on the camera he may want to buy... Not too unusual is it ?? -- /eric-UK Image control: Zoom out | Zoom 100% | Zoom in | Expand / Contract | New window

Hi, Photoshop uses dcraw (http://www.cybercom.net/~dcoffin/dcraw/) to convert the raw images, and Dave Coffin (the author) kindly sent me a preliminary version that works very well, but it lacks the color matrix of the camera, so the pictures look dull. I've never used CS3, but they have some licenses in the place I'm working, so I will try to see if I can do something... Cheers, Jose
