Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II: Canon SLR Lens Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review

I´m very new at this.

My wife offered me a 400D for X-mas with the kit lens. Being new to reflex, I have, my opinion, taken good outdoor pictures, but indoor are most times very poor if not taken with flash.

I´m considering buying the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Any samples taken at night or indoors. Thanks

You must get one!

It is an essential lens...

And for the price??

THE best deal from Canon in 08. I have 16-35 II, 24-105, and 100-400.

The 16-35 is a great lens with amazing colors...

But you can get a 50 f1.8 for the price of the FILTER for that lens!!

I find myself using the 50 more than any other lens.

Its super light, and takes GREAT pics. the only bad thing i can see about getting the "thrifty 50" is that you will start lusting over fast primes!!! the ability to completely control the focal plane on your pictures adds so much more to portraiture.

Total subject isolation.

Plus you can shoot in really low light, indoors or out, and the pictures that come out of it can really "zing" with amazing detail that gets lost in all but the very best zooms.

He he... you should read this thread, we "converted" him!

Hope you aren't considering the 50mm prime as your only lens.

While that would have made sense in the days of 35mm film SLRs, it wouldn't make much sense with current cropped sensor DSLRs for several reasons: 1.

Excellent and inexpensive zooms are now available and they provide a great deal more flexibility. 2.

The 50mm focal length on the 400D will act like (e.g.

- provide the same angle of view as) a 80mm lens on the older film SLRs.

That would be a very odd choice for almost all users. See if you can get it with the new IS kit lens. Dan Quote: : >

You have a bit more $ that you can spend.

The 28 f/1.8 is a great option on a crop camera.

You have been using the kit lens, at what focal length (i.e.

Where on the zoom dial) do you most often shoot.

If it is at the wide rather than long end, then the 28 would do more for you than the 50 (but costs several times more).

I was just trying out the lens to see if is okay 'cause have not use it for quite some time now. Image control: Zoom out | Zoom 100% | Zoom in | Expand / Contract | New window

Love my nifty fifty.

Has turned me on to primes.
