14-35mm f2 does NOT Face Detect with e420/520 fyi, and some notes: Olympus SLR Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review
Sorry, it this was said before (but, could not find any answer on this - in this forum)
Well I just got to test the "Face Detection" and LV-AF on the e420/520 today on my 14-35mm f2.
* LV-AF yes (but, did not see the 11 points come up (only 3) ...
Don't know this cam, so I am not sure if I am doing something wrong :)
* Face Detection - NO ...
Kinda wanted to see this in action ...
And it is a little strange that it would not work on this ...
The newest TOP PRO lens.
Before people start jumping all over me about if it matters or if I would "really" use it.
Imho, it should not matter ...
It is a "tool" I should be at least be able to have on this lens (when kit lens do)
I totally would try to use it on a "Churn and Burn" shoot ...
Where I am shooting as much as 200 "snaps" of people for a directory a company wants to send out.
Would love to see how well the Face Detection would Focus and Expose ALL the faces in a small Group shot ...
AND "Choose" the lowest F-Stop possable for the shot (that is what I "hope" it will do).
Some side notes:
* The speed of LV-AF was not Bad, for LV-AF :) ...
On the 14-35mm f2 on a e420/520 ...
I think it was only using the 3 points ...
Did not see the 11 points come up.
* With the 25mm f2.8 pancake & e420 ...
Face detection seems to work and was kinda fun.
As well as LV-AF ...
(way better LV-AF than on my older e510) ...
Seemed actually useable.
This would be a handy feature when you want to give someone that knows nothing about camera's , "your" camera to take a picture of your group.
The e420/25mm f2.8 felt smaller than I thought it would (a good thing) ...
Maybe it's because I had my 14-35mm on my e510 lol.
* Looking for a great UV for the 14-35?
Love the quality of the 77mm Heliopan UV SH-PMC, and matching Polfilter Circular SH-PMC (it has numbers on the rim 1-26 so you can see where you last turned it)
The rim is thin on the UV ...
But the Oly Lens cap works on the UV & Polofilter (have heard some other brands lens caps might not - on the Polfilter, think they said it was not threaded, but mine are)
Thank you Setaside for the great advice:
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1022&message=24819138
Setaside, yes a Clear winner on the Heliopan SH-PMC's
And I also did buy a Hakuba, Ultraknit (microfiber) Cleaning /Polishing Cloth.
http://www.hakubausa.com/csite/c_products3.asp?cc=70&cs=40
The store I bought it from only has the UltraKnit cloth (did not stock the Superknit cloth)
Still have not found a bag (in Hawaii) that "just" fits the e510 and the 14-35mm f2)
Was hoping to find a bag that is like: a TLZ Mini, that is as "tall" as the Nova 2 AW, I think a bag like that would fit.
(guess I might have to Mail Order this) Does anyone know of a bag that will work well (just fit) and I can buy it on-line?
(have a link?
Thank you,
HG

14-35mm f2, & a 50mm f2+1.4TC is my fav.
Combo on two 'IS' oly bodys.

Have you tried upgrading the firmware of the lens (if available)?
Maybe the "tool" is considered unprofessional therefore it's not incorporated in your top pro lens.
(like the absence of scene modes on the E1, 5D or other pro cameras) I hope thinking this way will make you feel better.

LOL, maybe you are right.
but, scene modes I don't use ...
This Face detection, I would like to at least try to use it.
Live Veiw was at one time "thought" unprofessional and a P&S feature.
But, it is "really" useful in the studio (and when you have to shoot over and under) ....
And when critical manual focus is nessasary.

The newest

I believe there must be some feature needed in the lens for the contrast detect AF (rather than hybrid) to kick in, and you need contrast AF to do face detect.
Maybe something like the fineness of the steps done as the camera adjust the lens forwards and back to determine if something is in focus (as opposed to speed that the motor moves for the SWD lenses).

I haven't seen them in action, but have you looked at Think Tank Photo's digital holsters?
Unfortunately, they don't seem to have a retailer in Hawaii.

In terms of more normal bags, the Adorama Slinger works well for a single camera (without battery grip) and a 50-200mm + EC-14 mounted, so it should work for the 14-35mm:

With respect to Live View focusing, both the E-420 and E-520 can use one of three modes of focusing.
Imager-AF, Hybrid-AF and AF sensor-AF.
Both cameras are set with a factory default of Imager-AF focusing.
However, as noted in the manual (P.
37) Imager-AF focusing can only be done with certain lenses.
You have to go to the Olympus web site to see a list of those lenses, but they are currently the two kit lenses and the new pancake lens.
If one of those three lenses is not on the camera and the camera is set to the factory standard of Imager-AF, the camera automatically falls back to Hybrid-AF focusing.
Unfortunately, Hybrid-AF and AF sensor-AF are incompatible with face detection technology and the higher number of focusing points associated with it.
Bottom line is that if you want to use face detection technology and the higher number of focusing points you must be using one of the kit lenses or the pancake lens and must have your camera set to Imager-AF focusing.

Actually, the E-510 does have Live View AF using the AF sensors.
When in Live View, press the AEL button.
The camera is hard wired to change the function of the AEL button from exposure lock to focus or focus lock (if held depressed) when in Live View mode.
It is poorly documented in the manual so almost everyone misses it.

Michael,
Thank you ...
You are "really" a resourse here.
Have not looked at the Holster ...
But I looks like it is "just" what I was looking for.
Yes, anything that fit's a e520 and a 50-200 SWD is prabably the size I am looking for.
At some point, I should get the 50-200 also ...
But was hoping for a f2.8 also on the long side ...
And that is not too far from the f3.5 at 200.
So, I am hoping Oly can keep the size down.
was hoping the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 was it ...
But ... noooo.

You do know you have to put face detection on in the menu system right?
(I may have missed that you stated you already did this - sorry).
Also only in live view does face detection work.
As stated by others.

Have been trying to get an answer to this for weeks now (before, I bought the lens)
And you really explained it ...
Honestly, I would not have got this reading the manual ...
I think :)
Now, it begs the question ..
Why the 14-35 cannot imager-AF?

Now, really :) ...
I just bought a 14-35 f2 ...
Can you see me mounting the kit lens to get FD and I-AF?
LOL
Now if the pancake lens was PRO grade f2 (at the 50mm f2 level) I would.

Yes, you can LV AF on a e510 ...
I use a work around.
Swap the AEL botton for AF ...
And change to Manual focus.
That way you can Lock Focus with the AEL (wait for that "moment") and save some time when you eventually shutter release.
