Canon 5D Lens Choice: Canon EOS-1D / 1Ds / 5D Forum: Digital Photography Review

I may pickup a 5D, $ tight for lens, and my 17-55 will not work on the 5D. Question, while I know the 24-105L is "the" general use lens for this camera, how does the Canon 28-135 IS perform on this camera?

I have one right now on an Elan, and it seems to be a decent lens.

The 28-135 is not in the same league as the EF-S 17-55.

I tried it. I did not like it very much. Are you keeping the 17-55 because you are keeping a crop body?

If not - sell it and get something more suitable like the 24-105, or the 24-70? Quote: : >

I have used both the 28-135 and the 24-105L on the 5D, and the L takes the cake by far.

Contrast and sharpness are incredible, especially in a studio.

After going through buying and selling lenses in the last year, I've settled on just 3 for my 5D: 100 mm Macro f/2.8 - for Macro and portraits 24-105 mm f/4.0 L IS USM - general purpose 70-200 mm f/2.8 L IS USM - for outdoor sports Since I'm not a professional, I find that these 3 lenses more than covers my needs.

I have become more of a prime lens guy now..and am leaning more and more towards it... fast primes...especially on a FF are just outstanding... If you're willing to go with a prime...on the ultimate budget plan..Iwould go with the 50 1.4..simply outstanding..wide enough for good captures in the field...but so sweet for portarits-a real great great piece of glass..and 1.4...man...you just may not believe your eyes... If you need a mid zoom range...

24-105 is superb! -- Canon 20D Canon 5D

The 24-105 is discounted when bought with the 5D, so why not go for it?

If you can't afford it this month why not save up for an extra couple of months and get it then.

What's a couple of months when you would hope the lens would last you ten years? The 24-105 is a great all-rounder and balances very nicely on the 5D. But like the previous poster I hardly ever use mine now, because I also find that with a 50mm prime I somehow take better pictures and so keep my 50L on 90% of the time.

The 50 1.4 and 5D is also a very sweet combination.

Watch carefully your last year shots.

Choose best one. Check exif for focal lenght. Then pick up glasses. All my world is 16-35 and 85 1.8 for shallow dof portrait. Additionally im going for 70-200 2.8 because 85 is somethimes difficult /or im too lazy ;)/ and 50 L when 85 is too tight.

That is more than enough. Good luck!

You really need to think about what you will be photographing, what range you need to cover. And think about how happy you are buying and selling lenses over time. I need to update my signature, I now have the Canon 100-400 L. I am an amateur, but have built up my kit by having an overall plan.

Then for each holiday/event I have I buy the most appropriate lens. Review the photos you take at the moment, do you want to go wider, or zoom in more? Unless you have an important event coming up I would stick with the lenses you have (if you have anything other than the 17-55), and get a feel for the camera. If you need to buy a lens now, either save and get the 24-105, or buy a cheap lens with a plan to upgrade, the 24-105 really is a great balance between price, quality and range. You may also want to consider waiting to see the successor to the 5D, but having said that I am so happy with the 5D I would struggle to justify the expense to myself, nevermind my other half. With my 40D. I have used it on the 5D to see if it worked well.

It is pretty good but not great.

If you shoot in RAW you have a better chance of more keepers.

Now remember, it is not bad, it just isn't at picky level.

Save some money and use it a while.

OR use bill me later on B&H and get the 5D kit with the 24-105 and it gives you 6 months to pay down without any interest added.

I just did that with a 40D kit and it works great. -- Happy Shooting regards, def http://www.pbase.com/definchdds Image control: Zoom out | Zoom 100% | Zoom in | Expand / Contract | New window

Have you looked at 3rd party lenses?

The Tarmon 28-75 is very well regarded and inexpensive.

I have one that I got with my 20D and still use it with my 5D.

I tried a Canon 24-70 L, but could not see enough of a difference in IQ to justify the cost. -- jerryk.smugmug.com

I own both 28-135 and 24-105.

Use them on Eos 100 (film, yes still in the game!), 30D (soon to be replaced with 40D [or 50D?]), and 5D. 28-135 is not bad, but it isn't L-glass, 24-105 is, and it is in a better class. Seems my 28-135 is gathering dust most of the time now, but I will not sell it, after all, I got some very nice pics from it. dd-diver
