Joker's Look - Comic Book Resources Forums

Hey, So I was reading the recent issues of Batman Confidential, and the two past issues of the Batman RIP arc, and I've noticed that the Joker's has this kind of new look that has really done wonders for the character in terms of representation.

I think the new look is more sinister, and making him look more younger (early 30's) kinda gives that more modern appeal.

I really did like the Joker's last line in the last Batman issue " My nails haven't dried yet", along with the slick hair instead of the widow's peak, and weird curls that he usually appears with. I dunno I usually don't pay any attention to this.

But making him look like a young, early thirties guy gives him an interesting appeal, and a very evil look.

I just love the way Batgirl was afraid of him in Batman Confidential.

He had that sort of long hair rockstar thing going on.

I think adding that fear element among the Batman family along with a re vamped look can also help improve the Joker's character. More like a rant than anything else.

I'm really not familiar with any of the newer Batman stuff.

But any opinions on this?

Do we have any scans of this 'look'?

I thought he looked pretty typical in the recent Confidential.

The Lovers and Madmen arc though that is another story;

I was surprised that they managed to make the cut smile work so well and I kept laughing at his weird googly eyes..

Too bad about his characterization after the accident though, kind of a missed opportunity and it let down for what began as a great Joker arc and new origin. I love what Morrison's doing with 'new' Joker, but I have to say I'm not a fan on the long white smock he's been wearing.

It was fine in 663 it made sense and fit the themes and tone perfectly, but problem is he's STILL wearing it;

In the DC Universe issue, in Tony Daniels promo art, in RIP.

No thanks. I'd really like to see Mr.Daniels try something new for this version of Joker, something apart from the purple suit or a lame Marylin Manson gimmick. Inverted did you see the Jokers Asylum issue?

That was some of the best Joker art I've seen in a LONG time, though I know alot of people hated it, and it's very different to his usual comic book style.

He's basically drawn to look like Ledger in TDK, even the same face.

And it looks great.

Scans later maybe.

Dark Knight Returns, by far.

The white suit, lipstick, shoulder pads, the gaunt and wrinkled face....which was actually drawn in realistic, non-cartoony proportions - a novel approach for Joker at the time.

I agree with that.

The whole scrub looking thing is not doing it for me.

But aside from that I think he would do better with a more grungier look.

Maybe not a 90's Manson look but something from what we see now.

But it's definitly time to come up with a new costum. Quote: : Inverted did you see the Jokers Asylum issue?

The thing with Joker art is that to me it's really been a hit or miss type thing.

I would prefer to see a Joker with either slick back 30's gangster hair or a straight neck length hair style.

I'm not really into the whole curly hair thing.

I think maybe a new look + getting less bullied around by Batman would really make for an interesting mix.

Kinda like in BTAS, or the Dark Knight where he would get punched around, and laugh it off.

Just for the sake of explication: Here's Frank Miller's Joker: Here's Tony Daniel's Joker: Here's Lee Bermejo's Joker (my personal favorite):

From Jokers Asylum I love how he completely switches hair styles between panels ha ha Quote: : Definilty going to be checking that out.

Agreed. the last time he was truly dastardly was No Mans Land, and that was kinda silly.

It looks like Morrisons gonna have him rip into Batman in the climax though, which is cool.

I'm really hoping there's some clever plot or angle involved, something perfectly Joker.

They did mention Robin.... For the snazzier look I really like Michael Lark version, from Gotham Central.

I usually don't appreciate the overly exaggerated portrayals, which sucks because that's what most artists do.

I don't see why Joker should look like a cartoon.

He's weird and 'clowny' looking enough as it is. I never got around to finishing this montage.

This is about 1/3th of the images on the canvas, at a very reduced size

Though the 'Chelsea Smile' look worked very well for Nolan's film i don't feel that it translates very well across into the comics.. Though to be honest I am not sure if I feel that way because I think it's just too 'real world' for comics, or the fact that it annoys me when the comics alter to suit what is in the films..

A smilar thing happened with X-Men a few years ago, gone were the spandex suits and everyone was suddenly in leathers to coincide with the films...

The concept art for TDK had soem pretty horrific joker designs (and by horrific, i mean that in the best way possible) sample: good thing they toned it down though...this sorta look fits a "stalker-joker" (crazy guy who follows you at night, then stabs you when you least expect it) ummm yeah

Part of me wants to see a story featuring him.

ALL of me wants to see a story featuring him

Thats certainly scary but its not the Joker.

Glad they didnt go with that.

This is the best Joker look IMO. '

Tony Daniel's Joker reminds me of Dr Arkham wearing his mother's wedding dress.

I feel the same and i believe that a "Chelsea Smile" isn't good for the comic book version of the Joker. It's that i prefer Joker having a funny(almost looking harmless)appearence but being scary because you know that he's an unstable person that can do horrible thinks to you.

Hmm. Now that you mention it.... Weird that Morrison originally wanted the Joker cross dressing in Arkham Asylum as well.

He was supposed to be wearing a madonna cone bra or something.
