CGTalk - 3ds max, Vray. Are vray lights suppose to subsitute normal lights?
I don't know if I'm suppose to exclusively use vray lights (well I know I don't have to) or if they're only for ambient lighting or something.

Vraylights are area lights and are preferrable to standard if you use GI because of GI sampling quality vraylights produce(better than standard lights).
But if you need a sharp shadow, or IES light, you do not use vray light(but there's an IES vray light already).There's also a difference in reflection vraylight produces:there is an actual reflection of it, not just a specular in case of standard light if you use glossy reflections.
You can produce the same type of area shadow with standard lights if you use vrayshadow.
With vraylight you work from real plane size light distribution, and standard light doesn't have "mass", only size in shadow parameters.
So if you need an area light, it's better to use braylight.
If you need a razor-sharp shadow - a standard light.
Also there are hotspot\falloff parameters you don't have in vraylight.
You just have to know all parameters well to decide which is better for you.
But simply as an area light, vraylight is better.
