CGTalk - blu-ray disc vs hd downloads

I'd like to start a discussion on blu-ray disc vs hd downloads. blu-ray is trying to insure no one can copy there discs on computers and therfore it's hard to even play a blu-ray disc on a computer or maybe they want consumers to buy players to watch blu-ray .

. . hd movies aren't downloadable yet, itunes, netflix no hd downloads for comps, appletv not a regular comp. i'm a small studio looking to put out our video product and wondering which route to go. i don't like the route blu-ray is going, direct download seems so much nicer. what do you think?

There was a "Blu-Ray vs Digital Downloads" thread a few months back - interesting stuff.

Might be a good starting point for this discussion. http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=2&t=604001

. . You kinda lost me here.

I am not really getting your logic.

Of course you need a blu ray player for your computer to play blu ray discs.

If you've already decided that you don't like bluray, why do you even bother asking the rest of us?

You'd probably just try to invalidate our opinion anyway, at least that's what usually happens in a discussion when someone already made up his mind...

Specially when it comes to Sony related products. But anyhow...

If your video product is short in length, as a potential customer I would prefer to download them instead of getting a DVD/bluray.

If it's feature length, I'd rather get a DVD/bluray.

We still get (pathetically low) download limit here in Australia and I'm not gonna blow it on an HD video which I may or may not like.

By player i meant DVD player for tv not computer. I'd be into buying a rom blu-ray but not a player for tv. Yeah I heard Oz had bad downloading limits, that's someting to keep in mind. are blu-ray sales doing well? is itunes online rentals doing well? thanks

It surely is not as easy as getting a blue ray drive.

Your whole system needs to be hdcp compliant.

Your OS, your graphics card, the drivers, your monitor, etc. I guess the vast majority of computer setups in use are not fullfilling these specs and therefore cannot playback protected HD content on their computer even with a blue ray drive. -k

This reminds me of vista. Just when I thought "oh good something new that will make my life easier" it does the opposite.

It's more controling and limited. Blu-ray could be cool.

50gb discs! no interlacing or encoding or field order crap.

Seems like it's just going to complicate things more. "Your whole system needs to be hdcp compliant.

Your OS, your graphics card, the drivers, your monitor, etc." HD DVD please come back .

. . a screw dvd's I hope RED comes out with something.

RED is doing amazing things with video.

I heard RED is coming out with 4k plojectors and monitors which means they'll probably come out with easy ways to move files around.

They have a red ray, haha not that it's designed to compete with blu-ray but i think they'll have something come out that will compete with blu-ray. Sony's gone nazi on RED already I heard.

Threatening any dp's out of using any RED gear on any sony pistures.

Basically if you're signed by sony pitures to do a movie you can't use any cameras but sony's? poor sony .

. .

Your OS, your graphics card, the drivers, your monitor, etc." why is this a problem?

Who the hell keeps a system for more than a year?

Aren't we supposed to be in the same page by now ? but i do have to admit blu ray drives are still abit pricey, but that will change in time. blue ray is the future in the present baby *says brain washed sony user*

Quote: : blah blah blah... poor sony .

. . I don't think the horse is dead enough, look!!

I think I saw the tail twitches...

Beat it some more!! I had a feeling this thread's just gonna become another Sony bashing thread.

Might as well close it Sheep.

Aren't we supposed to be in the same page by now I am going to assume that was a joke?!

Lol As per the original question, since I have a PS3 it isn't much of an issue for me, but if you want to get into the discussion if HD download is the future (near) then TB drives are going to be all the rage..

Yay... o_O It costs about 400 to 500 for a ps3 that, plays br, ps3 games, lots of other media.

Or you could buy a TB drive that will store approx....

20 movies (approx using br 50gb as ref) TB drives cost 300 to 500 dollars.. So you are paying about 400 every 20 movies you buy, PLUS the download fee that is sure to ensue, whatever it may be. I think financially BR is the way to go.

DLable HD will either be too expensive or it wont really be HD (ala iTV or whatever its called) Plus you have to take in to account the actual emotion, feeling, etc that folks get being able to size up their collection.

Who here has parents (or even themselves) that prominently display their DVD collection around/by their TV's?

A lot of folks like owning an actual physical piece of media. Physical media will be around for awhile methinks.

Lol i don't see the hilarity but you can take it however you want i asume a professional digital artist won't get butt hurt spending 1k+ bucks a year you've proven me wrong i guess...

You purchase a brand new computer every year? You know, assumptions can make fools out of even the best of us.

I only recently purchased my 2k computer, before that I had been working on a 5year old computer. Not that I fall in to this category yet but most 'pros' have other bills, mortgage, hydro, children, food, savings, etc etc etc.

1 to 2k a year is a huge amount to most (I think).

Maybe an upgrade here or there, more ram, new cpu, more hdd space, etc, but brand new computer?

I'd be very surprised if the majority of 'pros' here on the CGS forums purchase a brand new computer every year.

In fact, I'd be down right flabbergasted. EDIT: Not to mention that most 'pros' have good computers supplied to them when they work IN a studio.

Why would they need to get a new computer every year?

The only people I can remotely imagine re-investing every year on a brand new computer is freelance artists, and even that is a stretch.

Quote: : You purchase a brand new computer every year? yes i do since i was 18yo (im only 22yo so its not saying much) Quote: : I only recently purchased my 2k computer, before that I had been working on a 5year old computer. i asume you did that because...?

You needed it right? Quote: : Not that I fall in to this category yet but most 'pros' have other bills, mortgage, hydro, children, food, savings, etc etc etc. i guess im just lucky, i don't have as many responsibilities as many people do (children or a mortgage..thank god) so i feel like the bastion of wealth right now, who knows how i will feel in the future about being so loose with my money, but my main point was in case anyone missed it is UPGRADE if you need to i bid you good day Geta-Ve

Quote: : but my main point was in case anyone missed it is UPGRADE if you need to I guess I just missed it when you said this; Quote: : who the hell keeps a system for more than a year? But YA!

Good day..

Yea this thread is going places....
