Bethany Discussion Forums :: View topic - A call from the Associated Press!
We got a call yesterday from the AP.
They are doing a story on healthcare and medical insurance maximums and got our name from the hospital where Brea had her transplant.
They interviewed me by phone for about half an hour and they are sending out a photographer next week to get some photos of Brea.
They are hoping to highlight the plight of families like ours who think they are prepared with medical insurance only to be faced with a catastrophic (sp??) illness that eats up their insurance coverage (ours was one million) and leaves them in a pickle because they don't qualify for any type of assistance.
One of the questions that was asked during the interview was "How have you managed financially?" I explained that we had used our savings, our adoption fund for our next adoption and we had sold our lake house and boat to help pay Brea's medical expenses.
The reporter fell silent when I told him of the kindness of Christians everywhere who contributed to Brea's medical fund (including our church) and I shared with him that we would have lost everything (our home included) had it not been for the community of believers who were the hands and feet of Christ to our family.
I invited him to read our website and learn more about who we are in hopes that he will see that our faith is what got us through!
I'm not sure when the story will be released but I will let everyone know when I find out.
It has always been my hope that Brea's story would touch lives and give hope to those who have none and lead the lost to Christ.
I pray that God will be glorified in this story and that all credit for Brea's life will be given to the Father.

Wow, Mary! That's awesome.
I know that if this gentleman visits your website he will be so blessed.
You have such talent in wording your journal entries, especially during the time Brea was in the hospital.
I was in awe each time I read a new one.
I can "see" such a beautiful strength behind each entry.
I'm sure that God will use this new opportunity for His glory.
Blessings to you,
Brenda

As one of your travel mates.
I'm excited they are sharing her story.
She is certainly god's child and a testament to all of us.
I hope that one day you will be talking about it on t.v.
Insurance is getting bad and it is important that this story gets out so that people realize it.
Oh I'm so excited for all of your family and little Brea.

You bet...I'll let everyone know when it comes out on the AP wire.
There are still many unknowns in our future when it comes to Brea's medical care.
Right now we have a little coverage since the hospital and insurance company worked out some discounts and we were able to get the Berlin covered under a grant for research but the little coverage we have won't last long with the meds and tests that Brea has to have.
Plus we know another transplant is in her future.
In the last 15 months we have spent just under $60K in our of pocket medical expenses and the bills still come weekly.
We are still praying about how to cover her medical expenses in the future but we know without a doubt that the Lord will provide.
We are hoping this story will bring our situation (and that of many others like us) to the attention of some law makers who might be able to change things for kiddos like Brea who really need Medicaid but can't get it.
Afterall, we pay more than our fair share of taxes every year ...but that is a totally different story!
