Jennifer Loves Sweatshops? Young Activists Blast Starlet. - Christian Forums

Student anti-sweatshop activists are ratcheting up their pressure on actor Jennifer Love Hewitt for her celebrity endorsement arrangement with underwear maker Hanesbrands, which stands accused of exploitative labor practices. Since last year, groups including United Students Against Sweatshops and the Worker Rights Consortium have pushed for Hewitt to take a stand against the alleged unfair and abusive labor practices by Hanesbrands managers at its factory in the Dominican Republic.

In response, they contacted Hanesbrands, and "were advised.

. . that the claims of the student unions were unwarranted, without merit and were being resolved" by talking with the Dominican workers, according to Hewitt's lawyer, Robert Wallerstein. http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/story?id=5237655&page=1

Its a good thing these students are ignorant about Walmart or I'd have to pay more for my clothes...

How many of those kids are wearing Nikes?

Reebok? Other name brand products who are accused of sweatshop affiliation?

The hypocrisy is mind-blowing.

The loudest people complaining about issues, are quite possibly the ones that are the most hypocritical.

And the reason they protest Hewitt and not Michael Jordan?

Perhaps because they fear a "slam dunk" upside the head?

What's cute little Jennifer gonna do, make a catty remark about them? I don't like sweatshops, but the sad fact is, Hanes and other brands like them often don't know this is going on.

They never see the factories they contract with, because they don't own them.

They sign an agreement and await the product to arrive on their doorstep.

So how are the celebrities endorsing the product going to know, if the company itself doesn't?

The are our source of inspiration.

The clothing corporations could make much better efforts to inspect the contractor plants to make sure human rights aren't being abused.

I'm not inherently opposed to low-wage labor, because it might be the best choice for a lot of third-world workers and it can help a country develop higher-end industries, raising the living standards of everyone.

However, to say that Hanes has no control over what their contractors do is silly, because Hanes could fairly easily offer an ultimatum: let us inspect the plants or we don't contract labor from you.

JLHewitt was an avid boxer in her early career.

Don't know if she has kept up or not. The article mentions hanes wages as 1.00-150 an hour, what is the average wage in DR?

In the USA, 1.50 would be slave wages, but there this might be great wages.

Sweatshops don't pay fair, they mandate long hours of work, and are unsafe. It takes a complete investigation to determine if a factory is a sweat shop or a good employer. If Hanes is supporting a sweatshop, how about hitting them first, then their supporting actress.
