- Conspiracy20, on 06/23/2008, -3/+15That's sad. It would have been nice to see a triple crown winner again although the Belmont is the toughest one to win.
- mal1964, on 06/24/2008, -0/+5My first year watching the Kentucky Derby was 1977, That was the year Seattle Slew won the triple crown, Then the following year Affirmed won it . Those two super horses made it look easy, Now after all theses years and no horse has won it since. The greatness of the two horses really shows.

- Insolent, on 06/24/2008, -2/+0You think for an event this important they wouldn't be able to assure, with hundreds of years of experience, that the horseshoe was fitted properly? Big Brown was a favorite to win this event and big money would have a huge interest in having him throw the race. Just like Sumo Wrestling in Japan, just like Steroids in Major League Baseball, just like referee favoritism in the NBA, there is the very real possibility this is rigged as well.
I give a ***** because it's more evidence of the sort of things people are capable of when money is involved. Maybe only the people who desperately want a lot of money do this, but I am concerned that just about anyone unhappy and with any desire for power at all loses all sense of morality for the right amount of money. - pyro789x, on 06/24/2008, -1/+3if you don't care, maybe you should stop looking at the sports section?
- leeloo200, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1What does horse racing have to do with sports?

Sweet! - Scranklin, on 06/24/2008, -11/+6wtf is this?
- comptonstomp, on 06/24/2008, -3/+18absolutely no need for the exclamation point at the end of the title.
- Richie311, on 06/24/2008, -7/+2Right now, there is a Farrier out there getting his own feet properly shoe'd for a once....
- Asheis, on 06/24/2008, -10/+2I have no idea who Big Browns is, and why I should care.. horse race gambling? or what? What's the point. Buried.
- Telephuse, on 06/24/2008, -1/+1Here's the thing: you gotta leave your house now and then. This story was plastered all over the news media for weeks.
Big Brown, a racehorse, won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, and was poised to win the Belmont Stakes. Together, these three races are known as the Triple Crown; winning all three in the same year is considered the pinnacle of achievement for a thoroughbred. No horse has won all three races since 1978. Despite being favored to win, Big Brown failed to finish first in the final leg.
I suppose it's your right to bury stories you have no personal interest in, but that's a little short-sighted...

- cubbiesx, on 06/24/2008, -0/+2i bet the guy that did big brown's shoes that day is looking for work right about now.
- sabroskie, on 06/24/2008, -0/+9Or he was payed to shoe it incorrectly and is living a great life.
- Somedude2137, on 06/24/2008, -6/+4why didn't he call a timeout?
- pandikukka, on 06/24/2008, -9/+1didn't know horse shoe had a lace
please bury me for that- WELLDOITLIVE, on 06/24/2008, -0/+1Roger that
- DemonCold9, on 06/24/2008, -2/+2Just one more possible reason for his loss. I doubt anything will be proven. Big Brown will be retired to stud as a 3 year old, which makes sense given his quarter crack, except his retirement was announced beforehand. When retiring a horse that hasn't reached its peak becomes a financially wise decision, something is out of balance.
At my local venue, there's a trainer who wins almost 60% of the races his horses start in. Aside from this guy, 30% is regarded as extremely good. If drug legislation passes and we see proof of enforcement, we'll get to see how his standings hold up. - sarchosis, on 06/24/2008, -7/+2A lot of thought went into his name.
- CAD420, on 06/24/2008, -7/+1One word: shopped..

- SillyDigger, on 06/24/2008, -5/+1The guy who hammered on the shoe is in BIG trouble
- nickfartzone, on 06/24/2008, -7/+4I disagree, the loose-shoe theory is simply a distraction from the shooter on the grassy knoll at the apex of turn 3. Sadly, we won't know the full truth until perhaps there is a deathbed confession from Desormeaux (unless the CIA has him taken out beforehand). And I'm not saying George Bush is behind this... but there are political ramifications to horseracing that go well beyond fixing races.

- deadlove75, on 06/24/2008, -2/+1You know how football is a dangerous sport but players accept the risk and consent to playing a game that could result in their death. At what point do the horses consent in horse racing? Ever since I saw the owners of Barbaro crying over the loss of their horse, I've had a problem with horse racing. If you truly love the animals and not just greedy for the money they can bring in, you wouldn't put the horse in danger like this. Barbaro had to be put down only because he ran a race.
- Insolent, on 06/24/2008, -0/+0Of course they were sad over the money. But also, some people are just plain crazy and might just look at it as tradition or the right thing to do. They might genuinely believe (and could even be correct) that the horse would rather die than be unable to race or run. Though I think almost all animals have such a strong sense of self-preservation that it appears to be more likely an issue of not making anymore money of the horse and the loss of their own personal legend and pride that saddens them most.
- BobScratchit, on 06/24/2008, -1/+3You'd figure he would have thrown off the shoe shortly after that photo was taken. I don't understand how they would put horse shoes on loose intentionally. These are not reeboks or flip flops. They nail them on with 1"+ nails. I think someone needs to investigate where the owners of this horse placed their bets prior to this race. Sounds like a fix IMO.
- Duositex, on 06/24/2008, -0/+1I would assume the money involved in the horse racing itself is typically a paltry sum compared with the income of the owner from the other enterprises. It seems more like a hobby to this class of people.
- hbrtmran, on 06/24/2008, -0/+2dats what they get for buying shoes at payless
