The Basics

What is Omgili?

Omgili was created in order to separate ordinary web pages from information rich discussions. Use Omgili to find out what people are saying. Many times you will have a question that has already been answered. Using Omgili, you can avoid posting already asked questions and quickly find your answer. Unlike ordinary search engines that prioritize articles and edited web pages, Omgili only indexes discussion forums. Omgili's unique algorithm analyzes forums not as a simple web page, but as an active discussion with a title, topic and replies.

What makes Omgili better then any other search engine?

Omgili does not compete with regular search engines that search articles and websites. Omgili offers a different kind of information, which exists in discussions and debates. Technical issues

What kind of boards does Omgili Crawlers support?

Omgili's Crawlers recognize the popular board software such as phpBB, VBulletin, YaBB, SMF, Invision, Snitz and FuseTalk.
In addition we utilize a sophisticated algorithm that recognizes most of the custom made boards out there. Even if your forum isn't on the above list, chances are that Omgili will still be able to parse and index its content.

Does Omgili use my forum's search mechanism or resources to provide search results?

No. Omgili is a full and complete search engine. All data gathered by Omgili's crawlers is indexed on its servers and only Omgili's servers and resources are used in order to generate the search results. This is actually a factor that limits server load on the boards and forums.

Is Omgili robots.txt compliant?

Yes. Omgili obey the standard robots.txt format.

Can and should I replace my built in forum search mechanism with Omgili?

You can and you should. Adding Omgili search to your board is simple and easy, check out our Forum/Board Owners page for instructions. Using Omgili search on your forum offers advanced search features and saves valuable server resources.

What is the preview feature?

The previews are a neat feature that gives the users the ability to view most of the discussion rather then the two snippets the search engine returns on the results page. The content may also be available in case the forum is down or the post was deleted due to database restrains. The original post link is marked in bold on the top of the page.

How do I tell Omgili to disable previews for my forum?

If you decide you don't want to enable the preview feature for your board, add the noarchive meta tag to your board's topics:

<meta name="omgilibot" content="noarchive">
or
<meta name="googlebot" content="noarchive">

Does Omgili spider my private forums?

No. Omgili only crawl into forums that guest users can view. Omgili doesn't register itself as a user, so private forums are not visible to our crawlers.

I want Omgili to index my forum, but my board access is restricted, can Omgili register as a member and get access to my board?

Omgili crawl your board as a guest. If access is restrict Omgili won't be able to access the restricted zones. If you like Omgili to crawl certain forums and threads available only to registered users, you can grant access to Omgili crawlers based on Omgili crawler's User Agent which is "omgilibot/0.3 +http://omgili.com/Crawler.html".
